Feel like I've been kicked while I'm down...

I had some blood tests done a week or so ago, and my doc called this morning with the results.  Everything looks totally normal, except that it turns out I'm allergic to dust mites and DOGS.  I have never noticed any problems when I'm around dogs. To make this worse, DH is allergic to cats, so it looks like no pets for us.  Boo.

And then there's the dust mite thing.  I cleaned yesterday, and starting in the evening, I was having trouble getting a deep breath.  Lots of chest tightness.  At least the allergy explains that.  But, now it means I need to clean my house like a crazy person.  I have enough trouble keeping up with the cleaning as it is, and it just got worse.  Great.

All this on top of the other crappy things I'm dealing with, and I just want to go in a (dust free) corner and cry.

Re: Feel like I've been kicked while I'm down...

  • Aw, that stinks!  I feel your pain on the allergy front.  I'm allergic to 17 things and even did allergy shots for 3 years.  It was NOT fun!  DH put me on some of his herbalife stuff and my allergies are so much better.  Maybe you can look into something natural like that to help.  If it was pollen, I would tell you to eat some honey that was made locally.

What else is going on with you?  I thought of you yesterday when I was running because I keep getting shin splints and I remember you got them and couldn't remember how you fixed it, ha!

Just take it a day at time and if you have to, wear a mask when you clean (I have to do it if I'm heavy dusting too)!

  • Thanks Jax.  You know, I'm more of a cat person than a dog person, but now that I can't have a dog, I want one even more.

Ash -- I'm still dealing with some exhaustion issues from my bcp.  I just started a new pack of a brand that I know works for me, so I'm hoping I'll start feeling better from that soon.  I haven't had a good run in over a month, and I've been so tired the last few weeks that I haven't been able to work out at all.

My very close friend K just left town, and she's moving to NY.  So I'm sad that she's gone.

Last night I had a horrible time trying to sleep, and DH snored like a chainsaw, so it was a rough night.

As for the shin splints, once you have them, the only way to get rid of them is rest.  Ice and some sort of anti-inflamatory helps.  So far (knock on wood), I haven't gotten them with this training (so since Feb).  I think what is making a huge difference for me is that I ice my shins for 20 mins after EVERY workout, no exceptions.  And I do dynamic stretching (think lunges and butt-kicks) instead of static stretches before running. And I take ibuprofen pretty regularly.  Seems to be working for me.

  • Boo allergies!!!

You aren't allergic to drinks or baking, right? I think you should come out of your dust free corner and commence the drinking and baking!

Good to know!  DH gave me some calf strengthening exercises to do because apparently that's part of the cause for the shin pain.  I only did zumba and 1 run last week then rested.  They were a lot better when I ran yesterday so, I'm hoping I can keep on top of them.  They hurt something awful and make me not want to run which I refuse to let be an option!

I hope the new BCP will be better for you.  Can you not do a mirena or something like that since you have such a hard time with BCP's?  I remember you saying something about it but can't remember what you said.

Also, if dust mites are a problem, I would suggest putting an allergy cover on your mattress and pillows.  That helped me enormously!

Hahahaha! Thank god, no.  But my BFF is actually allergic to alcohol! So sad for her.

Funny you should mention baking...I just took some PB&J bars out of the oven.  We're going to a Bare Naked Ladies concert tomorrow night and I'm bringing the bars.  I'm actually really excited about this concert.

  • Boo! I'm allergic to cats and dogs. However, the only dogs that cause allergies (for the most part) are dogs that shed. My eyes get all red, puffy, and swollen, and I sneeze like crazy if I get near a dog that sheds or a cat!  You can have a hypo-allergenic dog though! I have a toy poodle that I absolutely love to pieces!!! I had a miniature poodle growing up as well. There are a few other breeds that you could have as well - bichon, chinese crested, some that are mixed with poodle, etc. There are actually quite a few breeds.

That really stinks about the dust mites and cleaning though!

  • Ugh, allergies suck. I used to be allergic to nothing, now it feels like everything. I developed my cat allergy at age 20, inherited it from dad (thanks, dad). To this day, there are cats that barely bother me and cats that turn me into an eggplant. Ironically, MY cat is eggplant material for me and E's cats don't bother me nearly as much. Meanwhile, one of E's cats is the worst one for him and mine isn't an issue. Go figure. But I take Zyrtec every night and it really helps. Have you or H tried meds? The only thing Zyrtec won't help me with is cigarette smoke. It even seems to help me with dust.
  • You totally should get a hypoallergenic dog! I think Labrodoodles (sp?) are ok too. But they're big!

Sorry you're having such a tough day. I completely agree with Melissa. Alcohol and baked goods to the rescue!

  • Larissa - the funny thing about allergy meds is that i've been taking claritin daily for years.  I mentioned that to my doctor at my last appointment, which is why she wanted me to get tested.  She is pretty much anti-medication and wants me to control this with lifestyle and not meds.

That said, I have been having more problems this year than ever before.  So I'm going to try going her route, but if I don't get better, I'm going back to my claritin.

  • Funny... people are so different. There are people who get no help from Zyrtec and swear by Claritin; meanwhile, Claritin did nothing for me and Zyrtec is my life saver. Ha. By the way, if you ever do look into a non-shedding dog, I highly recommend a Maltese. Small, good natured, not yippy, great with kids. I've had two.

    And totally adorable!

    Excellent idea.

I hate allergies. I'm mostly allergic to Texas pollen. It's my arch enemy.

  • Do you have carpet in your house?  If so, you may feel a ton better to pull it up.  I know if could be a lot of money, but they did this at my Aunts house for my cousin and he felt 100 times better.
