Vent: Sometimes employers can be so dumb
I interviewed for a position last week , that I know I was qualified for. I have done the duties of the position & for the person the job would have been reporting to. On the job posting it lists wanting someone with a degree as PREFERRED but not mandatory. Which is why I wasted time applying as I do not have my degree. I also clearly indicate that I do NOT have my degree. The interview went very well and as I said I have done this job before and know their system. I get an email indicating they want someone with a degree. Which really kind of pissed me off because 1) I indicated in the online application and my resume that I do not have my degree. 2) I have DONE the job before for two frigging years 3) If they wanted someone with a degree they should have put REQUIRED instead of preferred. Which at least in my mind means either/or! Also they re-posted the position but their salary range for the position is high enough for someone without a degree but really low for someone WITH a degree.
Oh well it wasn't the job for me

They probably needed a reason to go with the other person and not you and that's what they picked on unfortunately. A degree doesn't always mean they're competent and unfortunately employers rely on the degree more than experience nowadays. Usually though their abilities shines once they start working.
My background is in science. I have seen quite a number of people with PhDs (in neuroscience, microbiology, pharmacology..from wonderful universities) who have no clue about laboratory work, they came very recommended and all,ready to do a post doc, but once they started I saw with my own eyes that they had absolutely no idea how to do the basic things and it always made me wonder how in the world did they get a PhD?
At least they had the courtesy to let you know the status of your interview. I had an interview 3 weeks ago that went so well, they kept giving me positive feedback that I thought I'll definitely hear back. Not a beep. Not even a response to my follow up emails.
I would love to and plan on going back once I am working again. Paying for school on unemployment is NOT an option.
It also shouldn't even be an issue when someone already has years of experience actually *doing* the job. The fact that so many jobs that can relatively easily be done with some on-the-job training now require a really overpriced piece of paper just to get your foot in the door is just really stupid.
It's such a racket. Unless the job actually requires very specialized training that you can only get in college, there is no reason for requiring a degree.
