what do you use for mosquito protection?

With the nice weather we're out in the evenings with the girls. It's really buggy where we are located so I want to put something on the girls but I also want it to be safe. I'm not sure the burts bees natural stuff is working well. I'm still getting bitten.

What are you using?

ETA: Also, is DEET a must?

Don't laugh at me, but we use mint Listerine.  Works like a charm!!  I've also got one of those Off Clip on fans that I keep hooked to my chair when we are camping so I don't have to smell like Listerine. If we are out hiking in the woods or whatever I'll throw some Off Family Care on as well as the Listerine just for added protection.

  • That's actually pretty cool! We'll have to try that.

  • Even though our family tries to be mostly organic and use natural products (including cleaning products) there are a few items I have yet to be able to replace and be satisfied. One area is mosquito repellent.

I use the lanterns that have a repellent pad, the off clips that you clip on to yourself/stroller and I do still other chemical products like spray (on feet/legs).

    Good luck!

We don't usually wear insect repellant. I can't stand the smell or feel of it. I make my own stuff. I put 1oz of Listerine in a 32oz spray bottle and fill the rest with water. I spritz it on the yard before we go out. I have been known to spray my legs with it a time or two, but that's about it.
  • I have heard of the Listerine thing as well as rubbing Bounce fabric softener sheets on yourself and keeping one in your pocket or stroller for the kiddos. I haven't tried them though. I seem to be particularly tasty so I stick to OFF with Deet.

  • Avon's Skin So Soft. We used to use it all the time when we'd go fishing and you know how they LOVE standing water! BLAH!
  • We bought some repellent at BRU that was Deet-free, and seems to be working well, but we haven't been really attacked by mosquitos where we live yet.  I can't remember the name of it, but it is by the other repellents.
