what do i do with these plants?

our little front yard was a glorious patch of tulips and other spring flowers. now it is a waste land of green stems with no blooms. do i cut these down? leave them? we have some sea grass growing in the back so there is still some plant life but coming out of the house this morning, it was a little icky looking at the flower graveyard.

Re: what do i do with these plants?

  • You can cut the stems, but DO NOT cut the leaves until they are brown.  Right now the tulips are making/storing energy to bloom for next year!

You can plant things that come up in the spring to cover the stems (like hostas or daylilies or other perennials)

  • Ditto kastle - the tulips won't bloom next year if you cut the leaves.

I usually wrap the leaves around themselves so that they're in a small bundle/knot and tie them with some green string to hold them together until they turn brown.  It looks kind of weird, but better than having bunches of leaves all over the place, IMO.

  • i was hoping K would chime in. thanks....i didn't know this at all.

and good idea Jen to wrap the leaves. i will fiddle with this over the weekend.

  • Some people also braid the leaves together to keep them more tidy.

  • Is the same thing true for daffodils? Because DH mowed down our glorious daffodil patch in the front yard and I'll be sad if they are all gone next year.
