new couch - furniture store recs?

We're planning on looking at RoomStore and LazyBoy - any ideas on places to stay away from? Service advice?  What to look for?

It's a dangerous proposition, I know, with a little one, but we really need a new couch.

Re: new couch - furniture store recs?

  • We bought our last couch at Hamilton's Sofa Gallery.  We were very happy with the service.

My other suggestions would be Belfort - they have a wide variety and different price ranges.  Haverty's has less custom stuff than Belfort, but I feel like it is nicer than a RoomStore or Marlo.

  • We have a microfiber couch (from rooms to go, i think roomstore is the same) and it is amazing when it comes to spills and stains.  I highly recommend looking into one.
  • We got our entire living room set and bedroom set from Belfort.  They have a great range of prices to choose from, as well as many different options for customization of fabrics etc.  Highly recommend them!

  • I recommend Belfort as well.  They have a wide variety in both price points and selection.  My other suggestion would be a slipcover style sofa.  We have one in a fabric that I can put in the washing machine.  And with DH, DS, and the two dogs, it gets washed fairly often!  It's really well-tailored and attached in strategic places with velcro, so it doesn't look like a messy "Sure-Fit" slipcover.  Most people that come over just think it's a regular skirted sofa.

  • If you can, hit up the Crate and Barrel Outlet in Old Town Alexandria - they get deliveries on Mondays. They have a great selection (depending on what you are looking for) and usually things are 40-75% off of the list price. You can also create a "wish list" in the store to be alerted for a certain piece.

  • Value City Furniture has surprisingly nice stuff.

  • We got our family room microfiber couch at Macy's and love it. Our living room couch is a light colored loose weave upholstery from Hamilton's and while I love it because it's gorgeous, it was a super-bad idea because we have a cat who snags the weave and it's light colored and our baby will inevitably spill something on it. He's already spit up on it.

  • We got our living room and dining room furniture from Wolfe Furniture.  They have a few locations but I think the closest was the outmall mall in haggerstown.  Very reasonable prices and I couldn't be happier.
  • Another vote for Belfort.  We got new couch/loveseat/chair and a half there in October.  It was from their 'clearance' section but it was ordered and then built for us, then delivered.  It came by Thanksgiving.  I liked that it was all built in the US.

  • We bought a couch two months ago from Hamilton on Leesburg Pike. Great service, good price, and the closest we found to what we were looking for. Delivery took a bit of time (I think we had to wait almost a month) since they use a separate delivery company, but overall we had a great experience.

The couch we fell in love with was at Value City on Leesburg Pike. We seriously went in there like five times hoping the couch shrank by two inches but it never did...haha. But good customer service there too. We had bought furniture from VC in Ohio before, so we knew what to expect.

  • We got our couch and loveseat furniture from IMI furniture.  We had actually gone to Belfort and just didn't like it-we were constantly hounded by salespeople and it was just an unenjoyable experience for us.  When we were driving home we saw IMI-it's about 2 streets away and stopped in.  It is much smaller but we found something we loved and it was a much more pleasant shopping experience.  They do have a much smaller in store selection than Belfort though.

  • Another vote for Hamilton's Sofa Gallery. We bought our perfect red couch from them 3 years ago and it was a really great transaction.
  • Another vote for Belfort.

  • I had a good experience at Hamilton.  I bought my couch and chair there 7 years ago and it's withstood roommates, 3 moves and a toddler (not without stains, but that's not the couch's fault).
  • We have a sectional from Roomstore and I absolutely hate that thing!  It is the most uncomfortable thing to sit on.

We also have couches from Value City Furniture and I LOVE them.  They are comfy and roomy and I wish we could have more of them!
