XP: Any green thumbs want to advise?

So I'm trying my hand at growing organic roma tomatoes..... indoors. I have an apartment and no yard, but I've really wanted to try it. I started the seeds in a wet paper towel and plastic bag a week ago, and just planted the sprouts last night.

Right now, they're in cow manure pots under a grow light, in 50/50 worm castings and organic potting soil.

The guy at the co-op didn't seem confident about growing inside. Neither did my mom. What do you think?

Kinda dicey. Plan on buying a lot of growbulbs.

  • Ugh. I was afraid of that. That, and killing them altogether. Like a horrific mass tomato-cide.

  • Do you have a deck/patio or front stoop you could put them on?  In a large container outside or even a sunny south facing window they'd do much better.
  • I have a fire escape that I could put them out on. Do they need drainage through the bottom of the container, or is no drainage OK as long as I keep them wet/not drenched? Sorry if stupid question. I  can never keep plants alive.
  • Yes they need drainage.  Get a container with a hole in the bottom and line the bottom will small rocks.  If you're worried about water dripping down the fire escape you can get a container with a built-in saucer.  It shouldn't be a problem though.

Having them outside will make watering easier too because you'll only need to water if it hasn't rained recently.  Stick your finger in the soil to see if it needs any water.

Even better, get a self-watering pot. I got this one out of a catalog and planted a tomato plant in it about a month ago and set it on my patio table. It's already 2' high and flowering!

  • Unless you have a house full of pollinators, you're going to need to pollinate your flowers by hand (the flowers have both male & female parts, but they need to...um...bump into each other).  I've heard an electric toothbrush mimics a bee for pollination pretty good.

Bahahaha! I'm so glad I came back to this board today. This is definitely a little tidbit I didn't know about planting tomatoes (OK- I don't know anything - but this is something I wouldn't have guessed.) I'll have to get some candles and soft piano music along with the electric toothbrush. Thank you!
