Has anyone made a career change or in the process of making one?
If so: From what to what?
Why?
How far into your career?
I'm in the process of going from legal to medical. 7 years in.
Re: Career Change
After I got my Accounting degree I went back to school for Paralegal. I had accounting jobs for about 4 years while in school and a little after. I always had an interest in law so did paralegal and had an internship while in school for 1 1/2 years. I ended up going back to Accounting. I realized paralegal wasn't meant for me even though I loved law. I also missed working with numbers and the pay was way better.
If I was only 19 or so I would consider another field than Accounting but at this point I don't want to go back to school again even though I'm not completely happy. And I can't guarantee that I'll like anything better.
Why? I liked PR in theory but not in practice. I wanted to switch majors to education my junior year, but by that point it was more important that I graduate and earn an income.
How far into your career? I worked for two years post college in two different PR/marketing positions before I quit to substitute teach and work on my teaching certification.
Best decision ever; I couldn't be happier!
Has anyone made a career change or in the process of making one?I switched careers in the last 3 months
If so: From what to what?I went from public school teacher/librarian to Children's Museum Educator
Why? I got my masters degree in Library & Information Sciences as an opportunity to expand out from teaching in a traditional classroom setting (my undergrad is in elem./ e.c. education) if I ever wanted to. That degree opened up this related but very different role in a non-profit museum.
How far into your career? I taught for 6 years before switching fields
It's a nerve-racking journey but well worth it! I now have the best of both worlds (school and corporate settings). Good luck & just remember that the more possibilities you set up for yourself, the more you'll be able to find jobs that meet your evolving needs throughout your lifetime. : )
Has anyone made a career change or in the process of making one? Yes
If so: From what to what? Wardrobe styling for runway shows and magazine photo shoots -->PR/ Major Events Planning ->Teaching
Why?
1. Working in "the industry" in LA can get really shallow. I missed having meaningful conversations with people, and doing more for society as a whole.
2. It wasn't uncommon to be working 12 -15 hour days.
3. It was almost impossible to find time to r meet straight men and date.
4. Eventually, I knew it would be horrible trying to balance that lifestyle with a family.
How far into your career? Styling for about 2.5 years it was an easy crossover into events, which I did for about 5 years. I still volunteer for the occasional event, but it's nothing like the 30+ events I was leading annually. I still like having friends and contacts who still work in the field, so I can dabble in it as I please.
