Birth control weight gain question

Sorry for posting a bc question over here but damn there needs to be a board for it. I switched to nuvaring about 6 months ago and I love the convenience, but nothing else. My periods aren't predictable, my sex drive decreased a little, and I gained about 20 pounds in 6 months. I am switching back to the pill I used to take but my question is... If u experienced weight gain from a bc once you switched to another or stopped it, did you lose some of the weight or am I going to have to lose this weight the hard way? I am crossing fingers that these extra pounds will come off as easily as I put them on but I doubt it. Thanks!

Re: Birth control weight gain question

  • I've had the opposite experience-- I lost twenty pounds on Yaz, then gained ten pounds when I stopped for a bit, then lost those ten rather quickly after going back on. I wouldn't bank on losing it easily, though. If I were you, I'd gear up for some gym sessions and a closer look at my diet! Good luck!!
  • Nope, I'd hit them gym.

  • Nope, won't come off as easily as you're hoping. I put on 30lbs after starting bc and my weight leveled off in October and I still haven't lost the weight. I've been in the gym and eating well but it's definitely hard to get off.
  • I worked at a Women's clinic and (this coming from 3 doctors who specialize in women's health and 5 nurse practitioners who also specialize only in that) there is no "magical" ingredient in birth control that just makes you gain weight.

For every person that swears the pill made them gain weight, there are many more that have not. Studies also show that many women will say they gained weight. when their medical chart clearly shows they have not.

Some hormones in the pill, and in Depo are hormonal steroids. This can make you hungrier. Many women will eat more (some will realize it, some will not). Or, they start craving bulkier foods and indulge in those more. Usually, an adjustment to a lower dose pill will help that (the Nuva Ring is low -but constant- levels of hormone). The best thing to do is keep an accurate and honest food diary, drink more water, and work out (it's also noteworthy that most women start hormonal BC at a time in their life when there are a lot of lifestyle changes-as well as normal physical changes- that would naturally have lead to wight gain anyway!).

Many women will swear it was the BC alone that "put" the weight there. They will argue and argue. But the studies and facts show that it's not BC in itself. So even if you switch back to your old method.....you are going to have to do some work to take the weight off. If the Nuva Ring was possibly causing you to nibble more, and your original method doesn't make you do that, some of that weight may start shedding on it's own.

thank you for posting this. It drives me nuts when women say it was the pill that did it. No, it was you. Eat less exercise more. I was on the pill for 15yrs and didn't gain an ounce if anything I lost weight. I think people will look for any excuse as to why they are packing on the pounds. I have the paragard now but am back on the pill PT to stop my period for our vacation. I've noticed I am more hungry buy guess what, I ignore it (I drink more water to curb the hungry feeling). I haven't gained an ounce yet.

  • It won't come off easy and won't come off as quickly as you want unless you work on it. I told my doctor I didn't want to be on any BC that caused weight gain. One of my doctors told me weight gain would cause my sugar levels to go haywire and I didn't want that.

I know that when I went from Lo-estrin to Estrostep, I LITERALLY craved fats. Like I would want icing, butter, etc. I noticed I was picking things out of the fridge and eating them as I walked by. A bite here a bite there. Absently. So i switched back and stopped having those cravings.  Had I not realized I was doing this (and probably was a lot more than I remember), I totally would've put on some pounds! Depo-Provera is a strong hormonal steroid. It will stimulate your appetite. Many girls don't realize that they start "grazing' more.

  • Doctors always say that bc doesnt cause wait gain, it just increases your appetite and as long as your aware of this, you can avoid gaining weight.

Yet...I still gained over 20 lbs over a 6 months on the ring, which would not come off, even though I started spinning 3 times a week.

I dropped 5 lbs immediately after switching to the pill, without changing my eating habits.  I just started weight watchers this past week to work off the rest of the weight.

  • Hmm.. That's only like 4 pounds a month. I don't think it's your birth control doing it.... Shoot, you could stop eating for a week or two and lose most of it, though I don't recommend going by that method...
