anyone with an MPH? job advice needed
My friend recently graduated with her MPH from a top 5 program. She's been searching for jobs, and nothing is panning out (interviews getting cancelled because of lost funding for example). I hate seeing her so down, so I wanted to know if there are any MPHers that can give me advice that I can relay to her. Are there states that are hiring (she's been focusing her job search on the east coast primarily)? What about websites or company's? Thanks for any help you can give.
Re: anyone with an MPH? job advice needed
I have an MPH (and my CHES), and public health is a really, really hard field to break into right now. The funding just isn't there.
Does your friend have a concentration of any kind? What types of jobs is she looking for?
While metropolitan areas are typically the best places (due to more funding) for public health jobs, they'll also be the areas that are most saturated with public health practitioners. If she's willing to relocate, I think that the midwest would be a better place. I just saw a job opening in Wyoming (can't remember where exactly) for a public health professional to work on emergency preparedness. Utah and Minnesota are two other states that place a very high value on public health and fund it accordingly.
Also, have her check the NACCHO website for job postings, and tell her to get involved (if she isn't already) with APHA and SOPHE.
