I've only been once. We left suuuuuuper early in the morning to avoid all the traffic (101S always seems to come to a standstill the weekend of the garlic festival). Plus, by getting there really early, it wasn't as hot.
It was ok. There were the typical crafty booths and the food. I think I had garlic ice cream. I probably wouldn't go back since you have to pay to get in, the traffic sucks, and I can see all the crafty stuff and get basically the same food at the free art and wine festivals over the summer.
::raises hand:: I've lived in Gilroy my entire life (yes, have pitty for me) so I consider myself to be a pro on this topic.
- Yes, overpriced. Nob Hill/ Raley's often has coupons.
- Traffic is insane
- Parking is worse
- Great food, especially the garlic ice cream
- It is crazy hot, so be prepared
- Beer selection isn't that great
- You will see GPD and probation/parole officers walking around to keep tabs on parolees/probationers
- Aside from the cooking competitions, arts and crafts tents, and food booths there isn't much to see. They do have a kid friendly section and some country radio station always plays music.
We probably won't go this year. I might have DH go just to pick up two plates of food for us and Garlic bread. But then dealing with the crowds and parking, might not be worth it.
We weren't impressed. It was basically like any other crafts fair, with a garlic spin to it. And I have to disagree with PP, garlic ice cream is gross.
I'm glad I went once just to say I've been there, but it's really nothing to write home about.

Meh. I have been many times. It gets super hot and dusty, so keep that in mind. Some good food options, so-so crafts and live bands. Garlic ice cream is pretty nasty, IMO. Love the garlic bread and bruschetta.
I think that it is worth it to go once, but get there early on, before most of the crowds and heat.
Having grown up in Gilroy, I go every summer. Usually, DH and I volunteer, so we get in free. Yes, admission is ridiculous and prices are high, but the food at Garlic Alley is to die for, the cooking competitions are pretty awesome--Angelo from Top Chef is going to be the guest chef this year, there's usually some live music going on. If you have kids, there's a nice kids section. The beer selections aren't great, but you're at a festival, so what do you expect?
My biggest tip, go on Friday. It's usually a LOT less crowded! I think everyone should go at least once!

This. I think it's worth checking out for sure. I've been a few times and at times it is very hot and there is not much shade or places to sit.
