BC Question

What happened when you went off of bc (pills)?

I've been on bc for the past 10+ years and am on my last pack right now, I think 2 weeks left.  I'm sure I could look this up online, but since I didn't do my homework assignment and post yesterday, this is my "conversation" contribution!  Should I expect any weird side effects, mood changes, etc?  I don't even know what my adult self is like not on bc, I started I think just before I turned 18.

Re: BC Question

  • For me it was nothing major. I think the biggest change was my skin became very oily compared to kind of oily.  Who knows, that could have just been in my head too.  I understand what you mean about not knowing though!  I started at 17 to regulate AF and went off of them at 26.  I had no idea what to expect!  Sorry this wasn't much help.

  • It varies from person to person. My 1st cycle off BC I had slight mood swings and more painful cramps for the 1st pd. But after that 1st cycle, it was exactly like it was when I was on BC. Oh I also broke out on my face more for the first couple months.

Though BC is out of your system within 24 hours of your last pill, it may take your body months to regulate itself without the artificial hormones. Meaning it may take awhile before you ovulate and get your period again. Or, like it was with me, you will ovulate right away and get back on track immediately. It's different for everyone.

  • After going off BC, my cycles were completly out of whack.  When I did get my period it was a lot more intense with cramps than usual.  I did notice more acne creeping up.
  • So maybe acne and cramps... oh boy, sounds like fun!!
  • I just went off after being on for 12 years. I felt great in the first couple of weeks, probably due to a spike in libido! But my face did break out a little (I was used to completely clear skin). I only waited six weeks for my next period, and was feeling extra bloated as that was coming up, but then the period itself was normal (not extra long or heavy or anything).

The weirdest part is that I always go to bed feeling like I am forgetting something since I am no longer taking the pill!

  • I didn't notice any real change.

Maybe slight cramps and my hormonal acne actually got much better and I haven't had any issues with it in the last few years.

  • My symptoms were mainly the libido boost. I'm sure DH never wants me to go on BC again. I never noticed any changes in my skin, etc. If anything though my moods got a little better.

  • Insane acne, I mean worse than high school.  That lasted about 3 months and then calmed down.  I went to the Clinque counter to try and see if they could help me and they said NOT to change my skin routine since it was hormonal.  I needed to let it balance itself out and any intervention would likely make it worse.

Also my periods were slighly heavier and my cycle went to 24 days.

  • I was on BC pills for 12 years and when I went of absolutely nothing terrible happened.  I was very regular after stopping and never had any difficulties with my mood or anything.  The only difference I noticed was that pre BCP my cycle was 30-32 days and after it was 23-25 days.
  • The only change I noticed was that my cramps were more intense.

  • When I went off BC in 2008 all I noticed was that my period were longer, heavier, but as time progressed my period got lighter. I went back on BC for a few months after I had A and I didn't see much change (other than my period got shorter). Now that I'm off of them again my face is oily (which I hate) and period are longer. Boo. I'm sure that doesn't really help though.

  • I was on bc for about 8 years. When I stopped taking them, the number on the scale went up about 10 pounds, but my clothes still fit the same. It's back to normal now though after a few months. I'm much less moody (thank goodness). My skin is just ehh, but my skins is always just ehh anyway. I pretty much regulated right away and I feel so much better not taking bc because of the hormones.

  • I gained about 5-8 pounds pretty quickly but other than that, I felt great. I didn't like being on the pill and - TMI alert - my sex drive went back to what I feel was appropriate...It was always pretty low while on the pill.

Ugh, this is what I don't want to happen.  I'm glad I'll be off of the hormones soon enough, but I'm really hoping not to have some of these side effects.  Thanks for the info.
