fios vs. xfinity?

We have Comcast right now (cable/phone/internet). We have HD, DVR, and HBO, and we're paying about $170/month. I think we could really easily get rid of the HBO package, though.

My cousin is working for Verizon now and said he could get us the same package (sans HBO) for $105. Seems obvious we should switch, but are there any drawbacks?

Does anyone out there have Verizon Fios? Can you compare quality to Comcast?

Re: fios vs. xfinity?

  • We were having regular service issues with Comcast (our neighborhood circuit was overtaxed, so about once a year our service would go out for several days until we could convince Comcast to come out and fix it - they always argued that it was our internal wiring and so our problem).  I used to rail about F-ing Comcast on a regular basis.  We haven't had any service issues since switching to FiOS in Jan. 2010.  Internet access is comparable.

We always had Verizon for phone, but we had to switch to FiOS for the phone conenction - the main drawback is that with a fiber optic phone connection you don't have a dial tone if the power goes out for more than how many hours their backup battery lasts.  (You get a backup box at your connection - ours is in the basement, so I never look at it, but I think it's the size of a phone book.)  As long as you keep your cell phones charged, it hasn't been an issue for us.  (Though we don't live in MoCo, where prolonged power outages are so common.)

  • I would ditto everything QueSrah said.  I never had Comcast to compare, but we haven't had any issues with Fios.  I think our package is about $130 with one HD tv with DVR and the other two tvs are just regular boxes.

  • We used to have FiOS and we'd go back to it in a second.  We have nothing but issues with Comcast.

  • I wish we had the option to get rid of Comcast.

The only downside I have heard about Fios is having to pay for them to make a service call if you have problems. But, I think I would still jump at the chance to fire comcast because our service is so, so bad.

  • We have fios and LOVE IT!!!!  We used to have cox cable which was horrible.

We pay about $150/month for hd dvr's, phone and internet along with hbo.  we also are getting showtime but not paying for it (ssshhh!!!!!).  Since switching to them we've had no problems.  Even in the worst snow storms this past winter we always had service.  We've noticed a better picture quality since switching as well.

Downsides:  truthfully I haven't noticed any... oh wait.. when you do start with fios the technician was here for 4 hours.. not a 4 hour block literally at the house for 4 hours.

  • Sounds like we should switch! I have to say, we used to have a lot of Comcast issues at our old apartment but haven't had any since we moved here. But my cousin also said that Comcast only broadcasts at 720p, whereas Fios can do a full 1080p for HD, so . . . I think I will make the call.

    Thanks for the advice!

  • Another FIOS user who loved kicking Comcast to the curb. We had consistent service issues with Comcast. It seemed like every time we wanted to use On Demand to watch a program some glitch would interfere. We dumped them as soon as FIOS was installed in our neighborhood in November 2009. Other than getting our initial bill straight, FIOS has been problem-free. Do it!

  • The only thing I hated about FIOS when we had it at our old place was that the router SUCKED so much. See if you can get a better router - maybe they just gave us an old model?? But it was awful. Now comcast is our only option and my connection is actually faster because we have a much better router. Of course if you connect wired, then FIOS will kick Comcast's a** but with wireless it was a nightmare for us.

I will still switch back to FIOS if it ever comes to our new neighborhood, but just something to look out for, if you can get hooked up with a newer, better router.
