Hey, I'm a newbie on the board, I hope it's okay if I ask a question ...
The former owners of our house planted wisteria at the 4 corners of our pergola, which is attached to our house. Last summer, I cut down the 2 plants in the corners where the pergola meets the house, as the vines were out of control and they were growing underneath the siding of the house. I felt sad doing it, but honestly, those vines grow so stinking fast, I was pruning every week and still, shoots of the vines would creep under the siding. The vines are pretty, but not worth ruining the siding on the house. I kept the 2 plants at the outer corners of the pergola.
In any case, I cut the 2 plants down to the stumps, about 10 inches off the ground, and put Round Up on them late last summer. I thought that would kill them, but no such luck. They're growing again and already trying to creep back up the house.
Any suggestions on what will kill these plants? The root system is spread way too far to realistically dig up the entire root system.
Re: how do you kill a wisteria plant?
You need to apply Roundup to GREEN tissue for it to work. It will not be effective sprayed on a stump.
The best time to spray the LIVING FOLIAGE is in the fall or late in summer, just as it begins to change color. This way, the chemical will be carried along the vascular system, along with the sugars leaving the green tissue, and enter the roots for winter storage. Timing the application this way is much more effective in killing the plant.
