underemployment is killing my brain cells

I'm dying in this job; I find myself completely unmotivated, bored and lazy.  I don't want it to have a lasting impact on my work ethic but nothing is developing in my job hunt.

I'm thankful to have the job but now I'm wondering if I'd be better off mentally without it!

I crave being challenged and mentally stimulated!

Anyone else underemployed? How are you surviving, mentally?

Re: underemployment is killing my brain cells

  • Me! I don't really have any advice because it seems to be getting worse.  I'm trying to really put extra effort into my job search to find something that is more challenging, but there hasn't been much out there asking for my qualifications.

  • Me! I fortunately only have a couple weeks left until school is over and next year I have secured a new job.  The only advice I have is to make everything you do the best it can be and try to create ways that your program or your business could be better, by looking at new methods or ways of doing things. That is as good as I have though!

  • Is there anything you can do at your job that would challenge you?  Like working extra projects or taking on additional responsibilities?

  • I know this doesn't do anything to solve your actual under-stimulation at work, but are you finding things to do outside of your work hours that could challenge you more? Like taking a continuing education class, training for a marathon, taking a cooking class, writing a novel, planning a trip, learning a language, doing yoga...you know, just something that you can get excited about outside of work. Having some kind of goal outside of work might help you feel better until you find a new job. GL and remember that "this too shall pass."
  • Have you approached your boss and asked for more responsibility?

  • *waves hand* Me, me, me!!! I'm so lazy and unmotivated at this present job- hope it won't be a shock or affect me at the next employer. Still looking for a new one (a year into the job search).

I do like the fact I don't work that hard (after the last stressful job), put in 8 hours only (paid hour lunch in there!), and can FB or read magazines when it's slow. Summer is our busy time, so I won't be as bored for the next few months. I'm just glad I got *A* job when I was laid off!

My H is. He creates projects for himself. One such project is now used in everyday work for his department (and he got an award for it)! :)

I work in child care as an aid with a Bachelors degree in child development. I'm not under-challenged, but under-appreciated.

I'm waiting and job hunting for something better as is my H.

  • I can't ask for extra work because I have plenty of work.  My problem is that it's mindless busy-work; nothing that challenges me and nothing that's time sensitive to at least motivate me in that sense.
