Reassure me

We've been looking into getting a new car for a few months. We've really been taking our time, making sure whatever we buy is a good fit and will fit into our budget. After talking it over, we decided to not finance a car just yet. Our Expedition still isn't paid off (within a year it should be). So, we decided that we shouldn't add another car payment on top of that.

DH found an older car for sale. It was a really good deal and it just made sense. I have a 60 mile round trip commute daily, so it made sense to get a car that gets good gas mileage.

After DH brought the car home last night (he went to check it out on his own and made sure it was in good working order), I really do not like it. I know that I'm only going to be driving it to and from work, but I really just can't get it up for the car.

I know that we made the smart choice by doing it this way. I just hate the color of it and it doesn't even have a CD player or an aux spot so I can plug my ipod into it. I know I'm just being a huge brat about it. I haven't told DH any of this because, like I just said, I know I'm being a huge brat.

Once the Expedition is paid off, we're going to trade this car in and get something that I want. So, it's not even like it's a long term thing. I really just feel like I'm being a materialistic, stuck-up brat. I know I just need to suck it up and deal with it, which I'm definitely planning on doing. I just needed to get it off my chest.

Re: Reassure me

  • We all want to drive a car that we feel comfortable in, so I don't blame you on this.  And I'm glad you wrote it all down and got it out there, so you can hopefully feel better.

At least it's short-term right?  With any luck you'll be driving a new car in a little while that you actually like.

  • I hear ya. I am driving a '94 Honda Accord. Those things last forever and get good gas mileage. This is a blessing on the finances but it's no fun because there's never an excuse to upgrade. My car has all sorts of scratches and dings from little accidents over the years. It has no CD player, just a radio. It's not pretty. Dh wants to get me a new car but we both know it's not ideal right now. I try to see it this way:

I don't care if a deer runs out in front of it and puts a dent on it. What's one more dent? (That happened a few months ago).

I love that we don't have to worry about a car payment for me. More income we can save or spend on other goals.

I feel safer driving around sketchy areas of town (it can change block by block here). No one would look twice at wanting to steal anything from my car or bothering me.

    Hang in there!

  • I'm trying to look at it from that perspective, bay, that it's only short-term.

The car is '99 Cavalier. It definitely does get good gas mileage. I'm sure we'll be saving so much money on the gas bill monthly and that will probably cover the payment on the Expedition, so it'll definitely be nice.

Zara, I like what you put about driving around sketchy areas of town. That's definitely a plus! So is not having to worry about the extra car payment.

I already feel a little better after writing it down and getting some feedback.

  • Here's the thing. I think you are being wise by really trying to hang in there and do the right thing for your finances. What would bother me the most is that I wasn't fully part of the decision. I could never drive something that I didn't get an opinion about and get to see, test drive myself. I would be a bit up in arms about making a large purchase, ANY large purchase without my full buy in.  I think that is fair to tell you hubs about your concerns to "get it on the books" so that when the time comes and the other payments are done that you can get  a car that you do like and that it won't get indefinitely delayed.

I guess I'm coming from the perspective of laying ground rules about major purchases and the value of my input. Not really about the car itself.

Edit - I have lived on my own for 20 years before getting married. I have a pretty vicious independent streak still - so my advice can be taken with a grain of salt. :)

  • Does it have a tape player?  If so you could always get one of those cassett ipod adapters - thats what I used in my old car and it worked really well.

Hang in there - it'll be nice not to have that added financial stress.  I didnt love any of my cars until this most recent one so I know how you feel.

  • I definitely get where you're coming from with how I worded it in my post, bella!

I knew that the car was going to be reliable, otherwise DH, who is a certified mechanic, wouldn't have bought it. So, I told him it was ok, even though I didn't see it beforehand (the car was kind of ride from our house, so I couldn't make the trek out there with my schedule). It's comfortable and it rides nice. I'm just being a little brat because it's not as nice as the Expedition.

Do they still make those? I'll definitely have to look around this weekend and see if I can find one.

  • Okay, now I don't blame you in the slightest. My boss in college had a Chevy Cavalier and made me run all sorts of errands in it.  I hated it too.  Just suck it up for a short while and then you can get another car.

I'm sure they do - I only bought mine about 2 years ago, I think at walmart - check there.  I'd send you mine if I had any idea where it was lol

  • Aw, hang in there!  Maybe with the money you're saving on gas, you can put a little extra toward the car payment each month and pay it off a little sooner?  I always get excited to pay things off early, even if it's only a month or two ahead of schedule, because I feel like it was on my own terms.  Anyway, maybe that will help put you a little closer to a car you like more!
