charting question

I am thinking about starting to chart my temps now that I am off BC.  I've read TCOYF, and from what I understand...you should wake up the same time every day and take your temp before you do anything else.  Did I read that correctly?  I don't  have the book with me now, so I can't go back and check.

For you ladies who chart your temps, do you set an alarm for the same time every day, temp, and go back to sleep if say, it's a weekend?  I am a teacher, so my wake-time will change by 2 hours once school is out.  Does that affect the accuracy?

Re: charting question

  • I am totally the goober who set and alarm and went back to sleep.  However, I felt I needed to do that to counteract all of the days I woke up after drinking (your temp will be higher).

I would do it for the first few months.  If your cycle is somewhat regular, you will quickly be able to pin point the week or so you want to be accurate, and when you can blow it off.  Once I got it down and we weren't TTC, I would totally stop until the next cycle after ovulation was confirmed.

Also, if you use fertility friend online, you can disregard temps you know might throw thing off.

  • Oh, and as far as later wake-up time, it only has an impact on that cycle.  As long as you are doing it roughly the same time in the cycle, it doesn't need to be the same time cycle to cycle, if that makes sense.

Also, I think I gave myself about an hour window each day.  For me, the time didn't make nearly as much difference as getting up to pee first or something like that.

  • Thanks, Amy.  That helps a lot.

Also, should I wait until AF arrives to start or can I start tomorrow?  I am at day 16 right now in a 31ish-day cycle.

I did pretty much the same thing.  But I always made sure when my alarm went off the first time to stick the thermometer in my mouth.  Once the thermometer beeped it was back to sleep for me.  Most have a little memory so it will remember your last temp.  After I was ready for the day, I would get my temp and plug it into fertilityfriend. Fun stuff!

I would wait for the first day of AF.   You could start temping now and plug them in as day 17 and on... You might get to see your temp spike if you have not O'ed yet.  If you have O'ed it will be a boring chart.

You could start now just to get in the habit.  But you probably won't be able to pinpoint anything, since it really needs to pattern to show when you ovulate.

  • Okay, thanks!!  I think I will start tomorrow to get in the habit of doing it.  I'm pretty sure I already ovulated based on other symptoms, but whatever.

I charted to avoid and I am in total agreement with everything Amy# said. The hard thing was waking up to temp and having to pee right away. Those 30 seconds waiting for the thermometer to beep feel like forever.

I got the VIP package from FF and all you had to do was input your daily information and FF did the rest. It was really nice to be able to look at everything and be confident i didnt screw something up. After the first year i kenw what to look for and what to expect so I didnt need the VIP package anymore. I think it was only $40 for 365 days. Thats how they set it up for you. Not 1 year, not 12 months, not 52 weeks. 365 days. So you get all those suckers.

But I also kept TCOYF close at hand because it helps explain some stuff that might not be as obvious on FF. Im a very visual person so it helped me understand my actual chart while reading it in the book as well.

Good luck!! You might actually look forward to temping each day.
