DH and I just recently bundled our new homeowners insurance with our car insurance (which we each had separately since I was in MI and he NY). Let's just say that we have HUGE savings (I switched from Michigan insurance which is crazy high and DH's move from city to suburb also helped). For excellent coverage on both of our cars we are paying $1266 for the year (after discount for paying entire year up front). Homeowners is basically free compared to what we were paying before for just our cars.
What I found interesting in this process was that DH's Hybrid 2009 Saturn Aura was $100 less to insure than my 2005 Saturn Ion. I have never had a claim, DH has when he was younger. According to my agent, insurance is just less on Hybrid cars because the insurance actuaries think Hybrid car owners are safer drivers. There are lots of pros and cons of hybrids, but I just wanted to share this one perk that I was surprised about :-)

Re: Hybrid perk & AW insurance
Hm, that's interesting!
It's funny how they figure out all of those things and the studies they do. That'd be an interesting job.

I'm pretty sure it's a NY perk to have to pay less insurance on newer cars. My hubby's 2008 GMC Acadia is cheaper to insure than my 2007 Dodge Caliber b/c it's newer and has more airbags. When I was looking at new cars in college, it was cheaper to insure a Chevy Cobalt SS versus a Prius, by A LOT, for the same year cars.
Your post reminded me that I needed to make appointments to shop around for insurance so DH and I can combine everything! Just got off the phone making them! Thanks for (unknowingly) motivating me!
My parents have one of those! How much do you love that thing? I keep begging my mom to let me drive it, but she's hogging it all to herself...boo, Mom!
Oh man...bundling my insurance was the best decision ever. It's sooooo much cheaper to do it that way.
*side note- When I went to get house insurance with Geico they asked if I had any animals. And like an idiot I told them "Yeah, I have a cat and an iguana"....
Got turned down because my tubs-of-fun iggy is too big, and they can't risk it. I was like "REALLY?!?!?! bc she sits on her sunning perch ALL DAY, unless you whip out blueberries the most movement she'll make is to give you the stink eye"
Really Geico, really? Insurance is so stupid sometimes. DH had Geico before we just bundled and when I was texting him about how this new company was less than what his Geico plan was my iPhone auto corrected "Geico" to be "frick". I found that super amusing for some reason.

That's great that you are able to save money. When I finally got off my Mom's insurance plan a little over a year ago, I shopped around and still constantly get letters in the mail from all the companies I didn't pick. I settled on AAA which I didn't even know they did that lol but they were by far the cheapest. I pay around $95.00/mo for car insurance whereas Nationwide and Geico both wanted over $120.00/mo from me for the same exact coverage. I have our renters insurance through Nationwide and thought it'd help to bundle renters insurance and car insurance, but it didn't since my renters insurance is so incredibly low...$12/mo.
I refuse to get on the same insurance plan with Jason until his driving record gets better. He pays over $300/mo for insurance because he was an idiot a few years ago and I'm not letting his crappy behavior raise my rate. Riddle me this though, when we got married he called his insurance company and told them and it saved him $40.00/mo yet when I called mine and told them all I got was a "Congratulations" lol...apparently mine was as low as they could make it for my car etc so no married discount for me...bs I tell ya.
That is so sexist! I would love to see the equation they use to calculate rates. I do know that one of the variables is how close you are to work, so if you change jobs or move and you are closer to work, be sure to point that out to them.

I actually work a lot further away now than I did when I signed up for it, so I'm just going to keep my mouth shut on that one lol.
We both love it, we're trading it in for the 2012 in Sept. when his lease is up. And I'm planning on either getting a new Acadia or Terrain when I can get a new one. And booo on your mom, wait 'till she goes to sleep and steal her keys bahahaha.
And Geico is the cheapest we can get here, but we both need full comp and collision. It was about $1000 cheaper a year than anyone else I priced out.
Wow! $1000 cheaper??? It is unbelievable to me that the price difference can be so much!
When I added my husband to my insurance as an eligible driver after we got married, my annual cost dropped quite a bit. Once his insurance expired, we added him to mine, and we are saving a crazy amount now...and the coverage is better than what he had!

After we got married we shopped around for insurance. To get quotes for us together, we each called our respective insurance companies and we received a "marriage discount" from each (even though our policies weren't together. Apparently married people have less accidents than non-married???
Anyway, we ended up putting him on my plan, and we now pay $420 less a year for both of us to be on it than we paid for mine alone.
