Kearstin - vernix caseosa

Remember when you thought for a split second that we were naming our baby vernix caseosa?  Well, there's an update about it in my 36 week "this is what's happening with your baby" email:

"She's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered her body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected her skin during her nine-month amniotic bath."

Anyway, thought you might be interested to know that he's losing his fur since I think you had asked what it was, too.  And it just made me laugh again...

Re: Kearstin - vernix caseosa

  • Oh wow that feels like so long ago!  Yea, I definitely felt real bad for your little one when I thought that was going to be his name! lol

That's crazy that now it's shedding.  I know you "don't" want him out.. but it has to be so exciting to know that he's getting ready to meet you guys in just a few more weeks!

LMAO Kearstin, I probably would have thought the same thing.

I am sure your baby is going to be adorable Megan, but am I the only one who thinks it is kind of creepy/gross that babies shed lol.

  • I think a lot of things I've read that the little baby is doing while in your belly is creepy lol  It's awesome, but still creepy.
  • It does seem like a long time ago!

And it's not that I don't want to meet him...I just kind of wish he could be here and in there at the same time - ha!  It's so exciting, though, that we get to hold him in our arms in just a few weeks!

Xan - I'm not gonna lie...it's a little creepy to me that he was furry.

I think that's one of the reasons some women get depressed right after having a baby.  Yes they are super excited to be able to have their baby in their arms, but at the same time, they now have to share the baby with the world rather than just have that special connection with the baby living inside of you, and only you really being able to enjoy it.  You'll be fine though...once that baby is in your arms, you wont miss being pregnant at all.

I think you're exactly right.  I get major anxiety when I think about all of the people who are going to come to visit and want to hold him.  Because some people don't realize what you said above, and they visit and want to hold the baby for hours (I think my SIL is going to do this), rather than just hold him and give him back to me.

Anyhow, I'm ready to share him with my husband, but not really anyone else (even my mom...how bad is that???).

I think that's totally normal.  My SIL admitted (once her daughter was a few months old) that at first she would get very jealous whenever someone else was holding her baby.  I was there one time when my MIL held the baby for like an hour and finally my SIL just said, "I'd like my baby back now" lol...I think it caught my MIL off guard, but hey, it's your baby, you should be able to do as you please.  If they want lots of baby time, tell them they are welcome to take the hours from 11pm-6am.

  • Haha!  No worries - Kearstin saw the message :)

And, yes, I don't share well, so this will definitely be an issue.  I already warned my mom that her time will be limited, and she was fine with that and completely understands.  Besides, I have no problem telling my mom her time is up.  Haha!  It's all the other people that I feel less comfortable saying that to.

Oh, well.  Every other new mom in the world has gotten through it.  Surely I can, too, right?  Carter may just need to nurse a lot so that Chris and I can have time by ourselves with him.  That's the perfect excuse...I mean, I'm not going to do it in front of anyone else!
