Do you follow a healthy lifestyle?

Are you a get up at 5am and go to the gym kind of person? I have a gym membership but can't seem to convince myself to get up and go before work. I've been following WW for the last year and have recently starting running more but I haven't stepped inside my gym for at least 5 months :( I'm probably going to cancel the membership since we haven't used it in awhile. Hopefully I can stick with the running and continue to lose weight.

Re: Do you follow a healthy lifestyle?

  • I get up at 5 and leave for the gym at 5:15 but that's mainly because DH gets up at 5 for work and I'm such a light sleeper, I'm up already. It's really hard to get in to that habit but if you can stick to it for two weeks (maybe try 3 mornings each week?) it's more likely to stick. Also, this might be odd to some people but when I had to train for a marathon with 4am runs a few years ago I slept in my running clothes so all I had to do was roll out of bed, put shoes/socks on, and be out the door. Last thing, again kinda weird, but I put a cut out of someone in shape from one of my fitness magazine next to my alarm so when I go to turn off my alarm I see my inspiration and feel really guilty hitting snooze.

As far as quitting the gym, there are lots of home workouts you can do but the key is being able to motivate yourself to actually work out and not come home or wake up and do other things around the house. I suck at that, which is why I go to the gym. Do you have On Demand? There are lots of great workouts on the fitness channel. Also, Jillian Michaels 30-day shred would be a great program to try. You can find it used on Amazon and Craiglist for pretty cheap. Yard sales and used sporting good stores are great places to get hand weights for cheap.

You will still lose weight by running, just not as much. You need muscle to burn fat while your body is at rest so you should try and incorporate some sort of weight lifting, even if you're using body weight for resistance with squats, lunges, tricep dips, push ups, etc.

Last thing, sorry, but if you have an iPhone or can look it up online the One Hundred Push-up Program is amazing! Pushups are one of the best things you can do, it'll raise your HR, work your arms, chest, core, and there's TONS of different pushups that you can do. That program is a great place to start and it takes very little time.

Good luck!!! Way to go on sticking with WW for a year and counting and running!

  • Yes and no. I don't smoke, or drink very much at all, and I almost never eat red meat. I don't drink soda, or buy a lot of junk food. But my exercise habits suck. I still haven't found time to get workouts in since DS was born. I am rushing in the morning and I am so tired with 100 things to do after work. The most we do is go for a walk most evenings after dinner which isn't much, but at least its something. After this baby is born I am going to try and figure out some sort of plan to get back in shape.

DH goes to the gym very early (5 am) several times a week. I have never been able to do that. I am the type who needs to get up, drink some coffee, and bum around the house til I am awake.

  • For the most part yes.  Before I got PG I went to the gym a few times a week.  I didn't go during my first trimester b/c I would come home and fall asleep on the couch (but I was also working 6am to 2pm or 2pm to 10pm at the time) and after my first tri I would just do low impact stuff like walking.  After having John and going back to work, I just couldn't find the time to go to the gym.   I recently realized that in order to get off the baby weight I needed to fit in some kind of exercise, so a few times a week I will get up at 5:15 and either walk/run or do the 30 Minute Shread (it's on Demand), and if I've hit the snooze button too many times I promise myself that I will do it after John goes to bed, and I've stuck with it for the past few weeks.  It's not the intense work outs I used to do, but fitting in a min of 30 mintues a day is better than nothing.  I'll also do 3 or 4 of the 10 minute work outs that you can find On Demand, like yoga or pliates or a fat burn cardio, just to mix it up.

I eat fairly healthy.  I really only drink water, milk and coffee, the only time I drink a soda is on rare occassion when we go out to eat, and even then I usually get water.  I have little snacks with me at work like trail mix, apples, carrot sticks and try to eat a little snack every 2 hours.  It take a little more planning, but since having John we've really changed the way we eat.  We've incorporated so many different and new veggies into our meals and when he snacks we snack and it's things like apples or raisins.  I also used to have a bowl of ice cream after dinner every night (which started when I was PG and unfortunately continued) and we went through 2 cartons a week!  We now have one carton in there that has been there for 3 weeks!  I definately takes a concious effort.

  • As I eat a BK Sausage biscuit

I go to the gym consistently 3-4 times a week...I eat relatively well, on a scale of 1 - 10...I would say I'm a 5...I'm keeping up with the status quo for being relatively healthy, could be worse, could be better

  • In general, yes.--eating veggies, not smoking, exercising, taking stairs, eliminating HFCS, keeping the meat and refined carb intake reasonable, wearing SPF, etc.  I should drink more water, drink less alcohol, have better control around sweets and work on stress reduction but there's always room for improvement.

I could never go to the gym in the AM.  I've tried and it doesn't work.  I've also tried just going outside and running in the AM--it feels good when I do but I skip too many sessions to sleep.  I find that for my motivation and my schedule going either right after work (usually in winter when it's already dark by that time) or late, like 9 pm works best for me.  Plus, the gym is so empty if I go at 9 pm--I have my choice of machines and can keep a reasonable personal bubble :)

  • Sometimes yes, sometimes no.  My only dietary downfall is my sweet tooth, other than that my diet is very healthy- no meat but I eat healthy fish once or twice per week, low-fat proteins, fruits/veggies, whole grains, and smallish meals/snacks every 2-3 hours to keep metabolism up.  I pack lunch everyday and rarely get carryout.  I don't smoke or use any drugs, and not having kids right now I probably average 2-3 drinks over a week (almost always red wine).  I also use a lot of natural and organic products, both in terms of food and household/beauty products.  And I'm OCD about sunscreen.

My exercise routine is what makes me sometimes healthy, sometimes not.  I tend to go in cycles- I'll get into a solid routine and stick with it for a few months, then I fall off and end up doing nothing for a few months.  Right now I'm coming out of a lazy period and have found a group fitness class that I really like, so I'm starting to get back into the routine of going to the gym or jogging at least 2-3 times per week.  It's hard, but I try!

I could of written this post. I wish I could go to the gym at 5 a.m., but with a LO that's not doable. I have been watching what I eat, don't drink soda, smoke, hardly drink. We also take a walk every night after work. I feel like all I do is chase after a toddler, picking up tons of toys, running up and down the steps helps keep me in shape. I wish I had more time during the day to really work out.

  • I was never able to go to the gym before work.  I would say go ahead and cancel the membership since you're not using it anyway, and put that money toward some free weights or something you can use to build muscle tone in addition to continuing running.
  • Yes and no.  I don't exercise, except for chasing my kids, and I would definitely never get up at 5am to do so.  We eat as clean/organic as we can.  We mostly eat chicken, fish/shrimp, or veggie.  I don't smoke or do drugs.  Until recently I only had the occassional drink, this last week has been heavier.  I hardly ever eat sweets or junk food unless you consider home popped popcorn junk food.

Ditto this. When I moved back home this time last year, I didn't have a job so decided not to join a gym and just work out at home on my own. Yeah, that didn't really work for me...I was hit or miss with workouts and generally couldn't get motivated enough to do an On-Demand workout or lift weights at home. I joined a gym last week and I'm super excited!

It's definitely hard to stick with something, but I find if I get into a routine, in a couple weeks I don't even think about it anymore, it's just part of my day. Start slow and do what you can. Figure out what works for you-maybe the gym is not for you but you can do workouts at home. I could never get up at 5am to work out (well, I leave for work at 530 so there's no way I'm getting up at 4 to work out!); I find it's better for me to do it in the late afternoons. Good luck!

  • Yes and no. I eat pretty healthy for the most part. I don't do fast food unless we're traveling. I have gotten pretty bad about exercise. My current exercise routine is walking our puppy. I want to give p90x a shot, I'm just not motivated enough right now.
