TEACHERS: Suggestions for a gift that you'd appreciate?

So, I'd like to get a gift for my 5yo's teacher since she's been a wonderful educator and friend throughout the year that DC was in school. However, I am on a tight budget (as it's the end of the month) but would like to get the teacher an inexpensive gift that will not end up at the back of the closet or re-gifted to someone else.

Do you have suggestions on gifts you've gotten that was affordable that you liked and have actually used? My first thought was a coffee mug but I think that's equivalent to getting the man in your life a neck tie, right?

What ideas do you have that I can pick up tonight for the last day of school tomorrow (I know it's kinda last minute)?

 Thanks a million!

Nutmeg, cilantro, sage, mint, thyme... these are a few of my favorite things! Visit The Nest!Visit The Nest! We have four children; one left us too soon.

  • How about a book for the classroom?  You could let your child help pick it out.  Or, you could always get some supplies for the classroom - paper, crayons, glue, etc.  Teachers have to buy a lot out of their own money so I'm sure a gift for the class would be appreacited.
  • PP had a great idea-- have your LO pick out a book for the classroom library. She can even write a note inside. I teach older kids, so this wouldn't really work for them, but I love it for an elementary kid!

  • One easy, inexpensive gift I've received this year is a plant. One of my students brought me potted tulips for Valentine's day and another brought me a bromeliad for Teacher Appreciation. I have another plant that I received from a student several years ago for my birthday in my living room. :)

So, I think a small plant is nice. Gift cards are always nice but I really do love the plants and I think that's an easier gift if you are on a strict budget.

  • Barnes and Noble gift card? (like $10). If that is too much, a plant is nice.

  • A book would be nice, especially if there was a nice note from your child in there.

I received a $5 gift card to Sonic for Christmas. It was fantastic! And I also received a set of our state quarters, which was really cool.

Quite honestly, a small gift and an honest letter about your appreciation would go a very long way. We typically don't receive those often, and I like to hang on to those "warm fuzzies" and review them when I have a bad day.

Even a card with a note of appreciation would mean the world to me. I love the book idea, too. Anything is going to mean a lot, IMO.

  • Honestly, a note of appreciation by you and/or your child will be treasured.  I like the idea of a book or plant or school supplies.  I also always like gift cards--even $5 to Starbucks is a fun treat.  :) Or to an office supply store!

A note means more than anything!  I too have a folder of the nice things I have received, they are so nice to look back on.

If you want to get a gift though I like the idea of a book or a small gift card.  I also always like edible treats (cookies & candy), but that might just be my personal preference!

  • I am a teacher I received gift cards to starbucks and target. But the best gift of all was a note from the child itself a cute little drawing and their name was enough. btw I teach 3 and 4 yr olds.
  • I teach older kids, so I usually get gift cards - B&N, Office Depot/Staples and Starbucks are my faves.

Honestly though, the note of appreciation is the best gift ever, no expenditure necessary.

I really like the idea of the book if you want something that will be used for years.

After teaching 30 years, my mom has an entire cabinet just for "#1 Teacher" mugs and a drawer full of things with apples on them. She and I both kill plants pretty quickly.  They are appreciated, but we feel bad b/c any plant we receive gets a death sentence.
