Kaesha's question about Midsummer Night's Dream got me thinking...
What movies are as good as they books on which they are based?

Re: Book -- Movie Poll
(Dork Alert!)
Lord of the Rings!
The Shawshank Redemption. Technically not a book, but close enough.
Both good calls! I like the Shawshank Redemption - both the short story and the movie! I love the LOTR films too... but I like the books better. I kinda put them into separate categories.
And now I'm totally drawing a blank... Ooh! The Princess Bride. Though funny, the book is nowhere nearly as classic as the movie for me. Definitely my favourite film of all time.

I've never read Shawshank, but the movie is wonderful.
I love Stand by Me, also short story rather than a book. The movie was such a classic.
Also, I thought Civil Action was better as a movie than a book, as was Circle of Friends (but that might be because I was obsessed with Chris O'Donnell when the movie came out).
my to-read shelf:
34/150
I love Princess Bride. I walked down the isle to one of the songs from it
LOTR were great movies, but the books are juuuust a bit better.
Shashank I can definitely get behind. Those movie was so true to the story.
I think I remember Sphere being very close to the book.
IMO, what makes a movie based on a book good is how closely they stick to the book.
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
ITA - LOTR books are better than the movies. But I just can't imagine the movies being done better. There's nothing I'd really want changed (except maybe the Tom Bombadril scene.)
I liked Memoirs of a Geisha book much better than the movie.
OH, and another one - The Shining. I think book may have actually been scarier.
Oh Shawshank, I love that movie. LOTR are really good. The princess Bride is one of my all time favorite movies. Did you know there is a sequel to the book.
The Green Mile I thought was a good representation of book to movie.
I don't think the sequel - Buttercup's Baby - actually exists. There is a chapter from it at the end of the 30th anniversary edition, but I'm pretty sure it was just added for kicks and is basically a joke (and also, that chapter is absolutely terrible.) We read the book for book club 2 months ago, so I feel like a Morgernstern expert
Haha, it's ok. There were girls in book club who didn't even realize until after they'd finished the book that Morgenstern, Florin, etc. is all fake. He makes it all sound pretty believable.
