Passover

We were in Orlando during the end of this past April. We didn't realize that it was the towards the end of Passover.  Their were tons and tons of families staying at the hotel there for Passover. At first I just thought it was for the banquet halls but when I realized a lot of the the stuff they had to keep from like driving, and operating elevators it kind of made sense to stay in a hotel.  Is this really common for Jewish families to do?  I found it really interesting.  I find it a little more interesting because around the time we went I had just found out that I had Jewish ancestry. It was a funny coincidence.

Re: Passover

  • I've never heard of that before.  I'm willing to bet those aren't locals - but people visiting family.  There are no restrictions for driving or operating elevators for a majority of Jewish people during Passover.  I'm not exactly sure what the Orthodox prescriptions are on that, but I do know that most Orthodox Jews seem to do just fine on a weekly basis without having to check into a hotel.

  • While we were there they were not couldn't press the buttons to call for the elevator so either someone else or a staff member would have to do it, and they all had drivers or shuttles to take them places. They also had designated toilets.  It was all very interesting.

Orthodox Jews are not allowed to work, drive, or use fire (or electrical devices) on the first two days of passover.
