How far would you drive?

I am very interested in a teaching job that is 40 miles away. So that means 80 miles a day. Then on top of that there is basically nothing between my house and the school ( we live in a very small town and the school is out in the boonies in another small town). What would you do? I loved the school and this could be the starting point in my career!

It wouldn't be that bad if there was no traffic. Now if it was 40 miles of congestion than I wouldn't consider a job that far away. But if you know your commute would be farily hassle free I think it's fine.

Is it all back road driving, since it's in the boonies? I'd likely do it - teaching opportunities aren't plentiful anymore.

So it's a straight shot of about 45 minutes each way? I'd totally do it. I drove 52 miles each way in rush hour traffic for 4+ years and it didn't bother me most days. I would have killed for 45 minutes of non-traffic driving for a great job.

I feel like I could have written this post! I have a teaching job 52 miles from my house. It is currently not a straight shot, but they are finishing a highway between work and home which will make the drive easier for me.

I've thought about looking for jobs closer to home, but the reality is I have a really good teaching job: I teach courses I love, the kids are well behaved, and its in a good community. With the price of gas going up I really considered getting a new job closer to home, but the savings in gas won't be worth it if I am miserable. So in short, take the good job!

Just be prepared for your long drive to be the hot topic of conversation. I feel like that is the only thing people ask me about, very annoying.

Like PP said, it sounds like a 45 minute drive so it probably won't be that bad.

I do that exact drive every day to and from work (40 miles to and from) and I love it. It gives me time to wake up on the way to work, and wind down at the end of the day. Usually I'll call my mom on the way home too so I don't have to talk on the phone once I'm home.

I currently drive 47 miles each way -- almost entirely highway going against traffic. I've got a great job that I love so it's worth it for me. What I'm trying to get used to is driving in everyday after having telecommuted for the past 4 years. It's tough to adjust to office life again and not have as much time to do things at home.

I drive 82 miles round trip. I live in the boonies and work in the non-boonies. I've been doing it for years and it has only recently started to bother me but I think it's because traffic has started to pick up due to the nice weather.

Well there is absolutely no traffic on this road unless you count tractors and combines! I'm just worried because of the distance and then in the winter we get a lot of snow (North Dakota) and this highway isn't the most traveled. Ah well its a good job!!!! May have to just do it! Thanks Folks!

Sure, do it. My DH did for a while.

I currently drive 80 miles round trip one week (from the boonies to another city) and 40 miles round trip the other (from the boonies into town).

I currently drive 50 miles each way (100 round trip) for a job I only sort-of like. But it's my first position in this field & I really wanted to get my foot in the door. I actually hate driving.
