Anyone ever have a quilt made for them by someone non family/friend?

Dh collects Harley shirts.  Since he's lost so much weight (80 lbs!) with the gastric band and all the running he's been doing (about 40 miles a week), he can't wear most of them.  I had him box all of them up and told him that someday we'd take them out and put them in T-shirt frames for his man cave.  Only I really want to sneak them out of the house and have someone make a king sized quilt from some of them as a Christmas present.  Only no one in my circle of family & friends sews.

Any referrals for me?  I don't just want to take it to a random person because I think he'd have a heart attack if something happened to them.  Some of them are about 15 years old and others are newer.

Re: Anyone ever have a quilt made for them by someone non family/friend?

  • I have had one made MANY years ago and recently Ihave made one for my husband with his old softball T's.  If I had more time, I would offer, but it's our end of fiscal year and I wouldn'teven be able to think about it until July.
  • I googled it quick thinking I might find someone with a random post saying they do things like this. Turns out there is a few places that make a business out of this?like this one: http://t-shirt-quilts.com.  Maybe I was the only one who did not know this.  So if you do not find a friend of a friend to do it, maybe hire a company.

  • I know a few people who do it, but I'm way Up Here.  Maybe see if there's a local quilters' guild - they might do it for a small fee, or just if they need a project or something!
  • My mom is a major quilter and I know there is a BIG community in the Twin Cities.  I'd probably go to the phone book and call the local stores to see.  Quilting is expensive because it's TIME CONSUMING.... but these stores often have shows, regular customers, and may know someone.  If I remember (mom brain + sinus infection) I'll ask my mom to estimate how much it would cost or if she knows someone willing to do it.
  • Slightly off-topic from your question - are you sure he would be okay with you turning his Harley t-shirts into a quilt? I know some people are irrationally emotionally attached to things and ideas, and if you had discussed turning them into wall art, he might be a little taken aback by being presented with a quilt.

I only ask because there was a huge issue with this in my family recently...

  • This was my thought too.  Even if you do decide to get the quilt made, maybe you should keep a couple of his very favorites and actually have them framed like you said. He might really want them for his man cave...
  • He knows that he wants to do something with the shirts.  I was thinking about using the newer ones to make a quilt and leaving the older ones so that he can frame them when he wants to.  The older ones are thinner and some are threadbare in areas so they likely wouldn't make a good quilt.  Over the weekend I spotted a few quilt shops by us and I'm going to start stopping in and asking about it.
