High School Graduation Presents?

What's the standard gift expectation here?

(And, yes, I know I can do whatever I want/can afford, etc.)

We got 2 graduation announcements - one for DH's cousin's daughter, who I've never met, but her parents came to my wedding and the mom came to my bridal and baby shower (and brought gifts) and we exchange Christmas cards.

We also got another one for one of DH's college friend's daughter.  We haven't seen them in a while, but they were pretty close at one time.

Is $100 about right for both?

I got like $25 for my high school graduation, but that was 20 years ago.

Re: High School Graduation Presents?

  • I would say $100 each (thats what i got from your post) is more than generous. I would probably do like $50 each for a total of $100 but not $100 each. Especially if you aren't close.

  • Ditto PP - I think $50 each would be just fine.

  • Agree that $50 each is fine. I'd only give $100 if it was the daughter of a close friend.

  • $100 is very generous IMO. I'd go with $50 or $75 each considering how well you know these kids.

  • I agree on the $50 gift for each.  It sounds like you barely know these kids and don't have a relationship with either one.

My niece is graduating this week and $100+ is more like what I'd give her, not a more distant relative or friend.

  • DH cousin just graduated from college and we gave her $75 check. Obviously this was what we could afford. I think $100 would be fine.
