Ash -- mattress protectors

Hey Ash!  When I was whining about being allergic to dust mites, you mentioned that you got a protective mattress pad. What kind did you get?  There seem to be so many, and in so many price ranges.  I don't want to spend $200 on one if I don't need to, but I also don't want to cheap out if it won't help me.  Also, did you get one for your box spring too, or just the mattress?

Help!

Re: Ash -- mattress protectors

  • We have a mattress protector on both of our beds - we bought them ( about $70 for the queen and $100 for the king ) when we bought our mattress.  They are the best thing ever, they protect against stains/spills/bugs/mites ... totally worth it in our opinion.  The cover itself has a 25 year warranty.

My mom loved them so much she bought some too.

We bought ours at Mattress Discounters ( where we also bought our mattress ) I would highly recommend going into a mattress store as opposed to BB&B, JCPenny or Macys.

  • I got mine at Target and probably spent 50-70 on it.  The one thing I will tell you that my allergist told me is to get one with a zipper that fully encases the mattress - not just a mattress pad.  When the cover encases the mattress, it keep the dust mites out.

I got them for my pillows too and I'm telling you the day after I put them on, I woke up without puffy eyes for the first time in years.

The kind of I have are kind of plasticy on the inside but fabricy on the outside.  I thought it would be weird and you would hear plastic every time you moved in bed but you don't.

Also, you might want to look into one of those air purifiers that has a HEPA filter.  I've not used one but I hear they are great for allergy people.  I had  an awesome allergist doctor that was super helpful in giving me ideas of things to do.  I'm also allergic to dogs and I have one, lol!

Thanks!  I was wondering about the benefit of one that encases versus just sitting on top.  I was looking on Amazon, and I saw one that fully encases that has really good reviews, except one person said it makes the mattress slide on the box spring.  Whatever.

I may try the air purifier, but only after I've had the carpets cleaned and gotten covers for the mattress and pillows.  Don't want to buy something I don't need.

  • They can make it slide but not any more than a slippery dust ruffle. Mine doesn't. However, be careful - you don't want to be "in the moment" and have your mattress slide off the bed. Although, wasn't you that broke your bed???

  • Um, no!  Never broken a bed before!!!  But I'm sort of flattered that you think it was me. Big Smile
  • Dang - I want to know who it was, I can't remember. I was impressed though, lol!
