migraine sufferers come in...

How do you deal with your symptoms at work? I woke up today with a wicked migraine (have gotten physically sick three times already today) and have an 8 hour shift ahead of me at 1pm. I can't call out since I'm going on vacation starting Sunday. Anything I can do to make the day bearable? I'm currently sipping diet coke.

  • Treximet.  It's a prescription and it is out of control expensive, but it is the only thing that helps me since I can't take asprin.

Since you probably don't have that, Excedrin Migraine, Coke, and take a nap.  Sometimes you can kick it by sleeping even 30-45 min.

  • Excedrine Migraine is my best friend. I love it.  Also when I've HAD to be at work because my boss was out, I've sat in the office with sunglasses on to buffer the fluorescent light which really bothers me. I look ridiculous but when it hurts that badly, I really don't care.

  • Is this in connection with everything you were feeling the other day?  Have you given the doctor a call yet?

That's what I'm thinking. I'm thinking ne feeling nauseous was the onset in my migraine. I took a pg test - that was negative.

  • I used to get them, but they have decreased in severity and frequency.  Closing my eyes, drinking water, and caffeine helps.  Hold an ice pack where the migraine is (mine usually my forehead and temples).  I also had a neck massager thing I would use on my head, and beleive it or not I think it helped.

I never got a rescue medication, but after seeing a neurologist I was put on BP medicine to try to prevent them.  I am now off the medicine and trying to prevent them naturally.  I take a multi-vitamin,  magneisum, and fish oil.  De-stressing, exercising, and eating clean worked wonders for me.

You may want to see if the diet coke is a trigger for you.  Eliminating artificial sweeteners made a difference.  Some people it does not.
I agree, you should see a doctor.  Sometimes it is related to blood pressure, blood sugar, or more serious neurological symptoms.

  • I'm late to this, but I agree that Excedrin Migraine generally does work pretty well.  It actually works better for me than Imitrex, which I took for a while but it gave me some icky side effects.  I've been lucky not to have any migraines since I've been pregnant, but for the few bad headaches I had, since I couldn't take Excedrin due to the aspirin, I took Tylenol with an 8 oz cup of coffee and that always helped.

A dark room and a cold, damp washcloth on my forehead also help.  When you're stuck at work though, not much you can do until the drugs kick in.  I had one so bad at work once that I was pacing in my cube, absolutely sobbing, right in front of all my coworkers, until H could pick me up and take me home!

Beta blockers are sometimes prescribed by neurologists to help reduce frequency of migraines, but I couldn't take them because my blood pressure is already pretty low.  Have you seen a neurologist at all?  They might be able to find something to work better for you.  I agree with Mel that a doctor can help you figure out possible triggers.  And I especially agree about the artificial sweeteners.  I can't have anything with aspartame (Equal) in it or I get a fierce headache. Most diet sodas are a huge no-no for me.  Oddly, I can have Splenda without problems though.

  • Thanks for all the responses ladies. I did go into work. I was delusional for about the first 2 and a half hours (to the point where I could barely stand and my boss was actually worried about me, I think).

Finally, consciousness came back and I came to. My head doesn't hurt anymore but my stomach is still pretty sensitive. I see a neurologist for epilepsy and I'm thinking about having him prescribe me something for when this happens because yesterday was flat out scary.

The fact that I even drove myself to work is frightening. I honestly don't even remember driving there.
