Remind me- RE: Infant Coughs

Poor Brody has an awful cough. We have all been sick at our house so I'm not surprised that he got sick as well. He started off with some gunky eyes and a runny nose/sneezing- just your typical cold. That was about a week and a half ago. Since then he has developed a cough that has gotten progressively worse. I hear him all through the night coughing but it doesnt wake him up. (In fact last night he did his first 11 hour stretch-YAY!) I am starting to worry a little about his cough though. It is not a barky, croupy cough but sounds "wet" if that makes sense and I can feel his little stomach/rib cage suck in as she struggles to breath during a coughing fit. Twice in the last two days he has started coughing/gagging while eating and thrown up his whole bottle.

What are the warning signs I need to be watching for or to take him in for? For the most part, when Ella gets coughs I don't worry much because I know there is nothing that can be done but I just worry a bit with B since he is younger. He has no fever that I know of and is acting happy and smiling but coughs quite a bit all day and night.

FWIW he has his 4 month well visit on Tuesday so I am debating about whether I should just wait until then to address it or if I should be taking things more seriously and taking him in. Thoughts?

Re: Remind me- RE: Infant Coughs

  • The main warning sign to watch for is a fever.  If he's not running a fever, you can usually let it run its course unless it starts causing more problems.  However, since his well visit is on Tuesday, I'd make a call to the pedi to see if they want to check him before then.  If he's running a fever or has a virus at his well-check, they most likely won't do shots and will have you re-schedule which will throw off the whole shot schedule.
