Habitat for Humanity
Anyone ever participate in a build? What was it like? My new job has an opportunity as a group to do one and I hoped maybe this would help with making some friends here. Just curious whether you liked it or not.

I've done it quite a bit with work. It's mandatory we volunteer at least 1 day out of the year, and we usually end up doing Habitat for Humanity.
It's pretty fun actually!! They don't make you do anything that you physically cannot do. Last year, I was in charge of the nail gun. It scared the bejeezes outta me, but it was really cool.
Also, the family who is moving in has to do so many hours of volunteer work on their own house, so there is a good chance you'll get to meet the actual family who will be living there. They also send TY cards with a picture of their kids. It's very rewarding when you get the TY cards in the mail.
They have permanent volunteers -- some of them are there on court order, some are retirees. Only the foreman actually gets paid. You'll most likely be partnered with a permanent volunteer who will show you the ropes.
Wear old tennis shoes that have good treads, old shirts, and old jeans.
