Ants -- follow up post

I posted about ants on here a couple of weeks ago and I got a lot of great advice, thanks ladies! I got the Terro liquid ant baits and I put them near our stove. That seemed to be where they were coming in from the wall. It was absolutely gross seeing how many there were, but in a matter of a few days, they were gone. Well, now it seems they are coming into the kitchen from another spot.

I set up two bait traps after dinner last night and within 15 minutes this is what we had:

How long should I give them before I start spraying them with ant killer? I know you're supposed to leave the traps alone so they can take the bait back to the colony and all die, but it's been 2 weeks already.

I've got ant spray & chalk and I plan to use these when I'm done with the baits.

  • I don't see any ant hills near the apartment. :-/ I would love to be done with these guys!
  • OMG..i got home to an counter full of ants last night!!!!!! I was like OMG where are they coming from! I have no idea where and of course we are on the middle floor of an apartment building to not really sure how to treat the outside for them.

  • Keep putting out the bait.  They will eventually stop coming. Promise.  That stuff is like crack for ants.

I use the liquid, not the bait stations, so I can put them in multiple spots and keep refilling.  I got a lot of ants when I put it under my dishwasher and on the windowsill.

  • We had a similar ant problem... its our first year in the house and the next door neighbor said they are a yearly occurrence.  =0(  I had the liquid Terro down for about 2 weeks, and the little buggers just weren't giving up.  I was beyond disgusted at that point, so I picked up and threw out the bait.  I then sprayed Ortho Home Defense around where they were coming from and haven't had any problems since.  Next year we're spraying inside/outside the house with Ortho as soon as it starts to warm up.

That's good to hear- we just sprayed with this inside and out about 2-3 weeks ago. So far it seems to have worked- haven't seen a single ant inside since.

Good recommendation. I'll try that if this fails to work in the next couple of weeks. I've noticed that there's already fewers ants today than 2 days ago... but it's still gross how many there are.

  • Terro stopped working for us when we lived in apartments. We had that stuff out for months. It certainly lowered the population, but it didn't eradicate them entirely.

Clean the area up, dump some salt down, and leave it there. Within 24 hours, they'll be gone. I have no idea why it works, but that's a tip I got from someone here on the nest about 5 years ago (maybe longer) and it worked wonders. It's cheap and non-toxic.

  • are there any tree branches touching your roof? That was determined to be the source of my parents' ant problem. They had the branches trimmed and the ants were gone.

  • I know this thread is pretty much done...but I couldn't help adding my two cents.

I use cinnamon...I read somewhere that it stops ants because they hate it, so I tried it around our porch outside and it works!  It doesn't kill them, but it does keep them away from places you might not want them (I.E. getting further out into your kitchen)
