Annnnd now my mom is being obtuse.

I've been allergic to onions, now, for almost 18 years. It has become worse, too, so that I can't even be within a few feet of raw onions without at least getting some hives. I carry an epi-pen for this allergy.

My mom asked me to make potato salad for the Memorial Day family picnic and I agreed, but then it occurred to me that maybe my family would want potato salad with onions, since the family recipe requires it. I obviously cannot do that. So I asked my sister on FB what she thought-- would it be horrible to eat potato salad without onions or to have to add your own onions (prepared and set out by one of them at my mother's house)?

My mom posted this suggestion: "Daniele, why don't you take out the potato salad for you and add the red onion for everyone else?"

Seriously?!? I swear she's trying to kill me. I cannot be around raw onions, so why does she think I would be able to touch them and cook with them? Especially after I had just presented that as the very problem two posts above?

  • Oh, seriously, Mom? If it were my family, we'd never make it with onions knowing someone is allergic just so there is less risk involved.

Come on, Mom, get with the program.

  • My mother often confuses which of the 6 of us dislikes cranberry sauce or carrots, but she's pretty familiar with our allergies.  WOW!

I hate it when people make salads with onions, period - so many people don't like them - including myself and DH (and most people I know).  However, for your own mother to ignorantly expect you to use them in your preparation of this is insanity!

  • Maybe it slipped her mom mind you are allergic by being near them also? I say this b/c my mom should know my allergy to chalk, but always seems to forget and mentions getting Caroline chalk. Um, who do you think would be outside 99% of the time with her with it? "Oh, yeah, guess you can't touch it huh?" *sigh* :P

My mom is an immigration lawyer. Her job is to pay attention to details that in some cases can save a person's life by preventing a deportation that would be tantamount to a death sentence. But she can't remember that I'm so allergic to onions that I carry an epi-pen with me?!? After 18 years and constant reminders (every family meal)?

    Yeah, no. She's just crazy.

LOL Believe me, same boat, but now that I've got the mommy brain I like to blame that and not think I may get the crazy gene instead :P
