Kid Friendly Parks in Urbandale

We will be staying in Urbandale this weekend and dummy me picked a hotel without a pool. Are there any parks nearby that are good for a 1 1/2 year old?

  • Where in Urbandale are you staying?

  • We live close to Riley Park at the corner of 53rd Street and Urbandale Avenue, and our 14-month-old DD enjoys the swings, slides, and climbing up & down the stairs of the equipment.  There's also a small shelter there & lots of grassy area in which to play.

Grace Lutheran Church just across the street from the park (on the north side of Urbandale Ave) has a little play area behind the building at the back of the parking lot.  They have a daycare there, but it has always looked to me like the playground is accessible during nights & weekends -- and is definitely the kind of equipment I think a child that age would enjoy.

I know there are lots of other options that others may be able to share. These are just the 2 I know best.

    Have a fun weekend!

  • Oh crap, Carrie.  I never emailed you back!  I'm so sorry!

I think you told me where you are staying at that is borderline West Des Moines, right?  So maybe Urbandale would be a further drive than you'd want?

But Walker Johnson park is fun and has a little pond area where she could feed the ducks :)  I'll keep brainstorming...

  • Walker Johnston Park at the corner of 86th and Douglas is great. It's got an awesome wood fort thing (for lack of a better way to describe it), and little house-like things that would be perfect for that age. They've got traditional playground equipment too, but it's a little distance away from the fort thing. It's a pretty big park - this stuff is on the east side near the woods and bike trail.
Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.
  • Were staying at the Extended Stay in Urbandale.

No problem MJ I knew you were busy and this weekend crept up on us!
