FB/Photography ~ need your input

Happy Friday everyone!  I have been mulling for a few weeks over whether or not to make a fb "photography" page for some of my photos.  As it is now, most of my photos are of my daughter (of course), and I did do a shoot this past weekend for a friend of mine and her two sons.  I am strictly a passionate hobbyist and NOT looking to start a business or make money doing this anytime soon.  I know I need to learn alot more and get tons more practice at shooting and editing before I could even begin to consider that.  My questions are:

1) Would it be tacky to make a fb page for this?  (I would strictly use it for posting proofs and showcasing work and maybe offering up some occasional sessions).

2) If not tacky, WTH should I call it?  I don't wanna use FIRST LAST photography, but rather something a little more creative.  Any ideas?  (That is if you're not on the "it's tacky" team LOL).

Re: FB/Photography ~ need your input

  • I don't see how it's tacky at all.  You should totally do it.

I agree!! I will get back to you on some name suggestions :-)

  • I don't think it's tacky at all. If turning pro is something you want to do eventually, FB is the greatest and cheapest way to advertise and get new business.  Plus if you want to start pro bono-ing to build your portfolio you can use that as a way to get potential clients/models ect etc.

I suck at coming up with names, hence why my biz is first and last name photography! lol!!

  • Just watch out - a friend of mine that lives in Jacksonville started a photography "business" and started advertising on Facebook.  The FL Dept. of Business Regulation or whatever found her on Facebook.  Since she didn't actually legally start or register her business and was accepting $ for sessions and not paying taxes, she ended up being liable for a crapton of fees, penalties and taxes.  She had to produce income/bank records, tax records, etc.  It was a mess.  And then the IRS got involved for their cut of her newly "found" income.

She was told that the State is using Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Flikr more and more to scope out unlicensed people conducting "business" as photographers.  Of course, the State is willing to go after these people for taxes/fees not paid.

If you are just doing free sessions until it really kicks off, I think FB is a great way to go.  I just would steer clear of ABC Photography and stick with something like ABC Impressions.

  • I love seeing all your photographs (especially of your daughter!)  I definitely think it's a neat idea.  I suck at the name thing too, but I'll keep thinking.

  • Do it!!!  What about Ava Jax Photography.  Or Ava [Jax's middle name] Photography.  Or like Nicole said trade out Photography for Impressions or something similar.  Haha.  I am so not creative when it comes to names.  Hence Macy Ryan Photography.

I thought about starting a page on FB too but I am too lazy.  It's just one more thing for me to keep up with, LOL.

  • I agree with Nicole, and that is why I have not created one for myself : ) the photo ops I have done are for mostly for family and friends and if they pay me its more like gratuity rather than a payment. I have done photo ops for food hahahha well I couldnt give a price when they ask me so they treated me to a nice dinner lol. The wedding I did, is of a highschool friend/bestfriend's brother insisted to pay me for time and gas so I used the money to help pay for my 50mm lens so its basically a gift from them. I did a boudoir session and the girls contributed to pay me and in return I did a girls night boudoir session and used the money to pay for the hotel and some wine and snacks.

Anyways, it is not tacky to create an FB account for this, I agree with a more creative name rather than FB Photography.

I'm doing another photo op for a website of dance instructor and for payment I get free dance session for a month hehhe.

Another idea is creating a Flickr account, i have the Pro version which I paid $25 for a year and I can upload my pics there so I can share as my portfolio for the meantime.

  • I think I agree with Junie. I've been using Flickr and the quality seems to be better for hosting, and it's very easy to use Flickr to send a set to someone or even to post a set to FB. I have a FB friend who is a "seriously passionate hobbyist" like you Wink and that's what she does. I like the Flickr smartphone ap, too, it's nice for viewing your set on the go.

I'm going to have to upgrade now to pro as well because I'm almost at my 200 limit for the "non pro" account. I just wish they didn't call it pro because "pro" doesn't describe my capabilities or my intentions at all.
