Been several times and will be heading there again this year. My husband's company is the wine sponsor at the event so I go an pour and/or drink wine
I thihnk the chowder fest is one of the better ones because you actually get something for your admission (free chowder).
Not sure if I can answer the "is it fun for kids" ...
There are a lot of kids usually there. If they like chowder thats also a plus. They have live music (The Ravers). According to the website:

Or if bring the kids to watch Ron the Balloon Man perform his magical twisted creations and be sure they take home a memorable character! Don?t get scared if you see Pirate Captain William Kidd & The Freeman of the Sea roaming our site, they are friendly chowder-loving pirates, arrrhhh!
