So, I promised my sister a cruise for her graduation gift/18th bday. She's not expecting me to follow through but I'm a woman of my word. Anyway, I really don't want to cruise back to Mexico and it's actually more expensive than going to the Bahamas even though we can drive down to catch the boat and not have to pay for flights.
Well, now I am debating thinking of something else and completely surprising her with it. I got a fat check for vacation pay and DH wants me to use it on a vacation.
I'm thinking Disneyland but then I think bigger and think Disneyworld (except you can't book for 2012 yet, grr!). I've thought about NYC maybe. I don't know!
Her bday is next week and she already got that gift (Glee in concert last week) but I want to give her an envelope that says she's getting a vacation but not tell her where it is until we actually leave next April!
Re: Trip ideas
What do you think she would like to do? Beach and relaxing? City and shopping/touristy stuff?
I've never done a cruise, but I think doing one to the Bahamas sounds like fun. I would think that there would plenty of stuff for you guys to do without really having to figure out the details on your own.
If you'd rather do more relaxing...what about some kind of beach vacation? If you're going in April, I would think you'd need to head pretty far south...maybe Key West? There's definitely stuff to do there other than the beach (although, admittedly, not nearly as much to do since your sister won't be 21 by then).
I think NYC would be really fun! You could go shopping, see museums, see a show or two on Broadway....tons of stuff to do. I've always wanted to go to Chicago, too...that would be an option. And I know I bring this up a lot, but Denver would make a fun vacation. Stuff to do in the city, but also really easy access to the mountains.

I enjoyed NYC when I went. There us a lot to do and depending on long you are there you could take the train to coney island and spend the day there (or even a night). I never been to coney island but here it is cool. NYC is expensive though. Hotel will probably be your biggest expense, but if up do research you could probably find a nice hotel for cheap. Food is somewhat expensive, but they would be anywhere. You would do the subway or taxis so no car rental there.
Key west is nice, but like carrie said it probably wouldn't be as fun since she is not 21 as it does seem there are a lot if bars there.
A cruise to Bahamas sounds fun and you wouldn't have to worry about hotels or anything like that.
I enjoyed Boston and Chicago when I went. I don't know what all is there but it would be fun to research.
I always wanted to go to Denver.
How much are flights and things to Hawaii? I would think since you guys are in CA that it wouldn't be as expensive to fly as it would be for me. I don't know about hotels and food, but I would think if you could find a rental home you could cook a few meals and save money.
Now I want to travel somewhere
I think that is a cool way to surprise her.
I agree with Carrie and Heather- about what you guys like to do?
Also, what time of year would you be going?
Cities I have been to and loved: NYC and Chicago.
I have been to NYC in the winter and during the summer and both seasons have tons you can do and see (although Christmas is amazing there!).
Chicago, the food, the sites, baseball at Wrigley, Shopping on Mag. mile, The ferris wheel at the Navy Pier, etc. I have only been here in the spring a few times. I would love to go in the winter.
As for the beaches, who wouldnt love a relaxing vacay after graduating?
Disney would be fun too, since she is only 18.
I think it depends on what your sister would like...beach and relaxing or doing something on the go constantly.
For me personally, when I turned 18 or graduated high school I would not have wanted to go to Disney. Simply because I thought I was older than I really was.
Thanks for the ideas. In looking at priced, the cruise might be the cheapest bet as everywhere else we have to pay for food.
I know she'd love the cruise to the Bahamas but by the time we add airfaire that one is like $1,800. We could do the 4 night cruise to Mexico that Heather did and then maybe while down I could also take her to do a studio tour and to Disney for a day.
