ever been at a traditional Indian wedding?

One of my bosses is having a traditional Indian wedding in July.  I have no idea what is appropriate to wear for someone who is not wearing Indian garb.  I usually would just wear the little black dress (sleeveless) or similar, but I'm just not sure what's appropriate.  I tried to ask him, but he's a little pre-occupied because his boards are next month.

The only thing I know is that the bride usually wears a red dress, instead of white -- so don't wear anything red.  Also don't wear white because that is considered the color of mourning for funerals.  I don't think they are usually conservative, so sleeveless should be ok.

  • ditto what Elf said.  I went to an indian wedding a long time ago.  I wore a little black dress and was fine. I also brought a shawl in case the room was cold.  FYI, the ceremony is LONG - like 2 hrs.  It's really cool and interesting to see, but I wasn't prepared for how long it would be.

I went to an Indian wedding but they were Christian so it was in a church but a lot of people were wearing saris and stuff.  I wore a black dress with a shrug over it.  I think sleeveless would be okay if it isn't little spaghetti straps but I would not do strapless.
