i finally saw the preview for this. it will be interesting to see. i hope they don't just focus on the extravagance and tackiness without addressing that a lot of these travellers are thought to have come across their riches through being cons. also i read that the one premiering next week is actually set in britain with an american voice over. they will have an american show but not until 2012 (at least that's what i gathered, i could be wrong). i know nothing about the british gypsies but i have seen shows on the irish travellers (americans called irish travellers, not irish people) and they were portrayed as very corrupt.

My Bio
Just finished watching the 1st episode and I have a few thoughts.
1. They seem almost contradictory in some of their customs. They say girls can't go out alone, have to ask permission from their parents ahead of time and constantly check in to avoid being scandalized but they dress pretty trampy. Mini skirts and belly shirts, lots of makeup.
2. I don't like the mindset that the girls stay home and the men make the money. Especially the way the groom-to-be said things. Saying how the man would never stay home with the kids while the woman worked outside the home. I mean sure H and I fall into those traditional roles, but its by our choice and me working outside the home is an option. Especially since I'm almost done with school.
3. Those dresses for communion are just so ridiculous. I mean there is so much focus on the dress, how can they really focus on the religious aspect??
4. As for the wedding dresses? Certainly not my style, but I'm not the one wearing it or getting ripped by it so I'm not as appalled by it as I am the communion dresses.
My Profile
i guess that's what you get when a 17 year old chooses a wedding dress!
.....tuned in for a few minutes and i think i saw the mini-in the front wedding dress....was it huge & poofy and weighed 70lbs? If so, that's the one.....and she was waiting for her limo to pick her up and she was "shaking nervous jitters" by gyrating like a go-go dancer in the driveway.....well, hmmmm, it was odd.
I flipped back & forth between that & tosh.o or man vs. food nation.....so i didn't get the full gist of the pt of the show tho....do you guys think it's worth tuning back into?

My Bio
I just watched the first one and it appears there's a second on on my DVR.
I also thought it was odd that they dress as skanky as possible and then aren't allowed to go out by themselves for fear that something may happen to them. Very odd.
I think I'll watch for a bit, but I'm not sure how many weeks I'll stick around. The shock value may wear out and then it's just kind of odd. Interesting to find out how other people live, but definitely strange.
Oh, and I also agree with the communion dress being way too much. I thought they'd be at their own ceremony, but with all the other little girls wearing "normal" dresses and then the one in the huge pink one it was weird. I wonder if it actually embarrassed her to stick out so much.
I dont understand and am shocked by a bunch of things from the show. How are they considered gypsies/travelers if they live in normal houses?
The whole :"grabbing" ritual is awful. Um lets teach young boys its ok to push yourself on a girl when she says no and if she still says no its ok to hurt her till she says yes. Date rape anyone?
The communion dress are ridiculous. I'm surprised the churches allow that. What religion do you think they are?
Ill definitely watch a few more episodes.
I'm not sure that they're all the same religion, but I think it says the ones on the 2nd episode are Catholic.
I obviously just watched the 2nd episode and I found it way more disturbing than the first one. I was not prepared to see young girls all gyrating around. Toddlers & Tiaras is one thing, but these girls were 6 and hoochie dancing all over the place. I really hope no pedophiles out there see this show. Yuck!!
...and on a much less "scary" level I also don't think they look elegant, pretty or glamorous in their dresses because they can't even walk. They're always falling over. Plus - where do they keep the dresses if they live in trailers??
