Before we moved to the area I ran mostly paved, wooded trails and without my dog because I was training for races and ran distances too far for her. I have been off the running train for 7 months and I am starting to get back on the wagon with shorter runs. We are renting a house in Lowell and I run mostly city neighborhood blocks and take my big dog with me now since she can handle the shorter distance. I take a baggie with me to pick up her poo if she feels the need. My moral question is- do you think it's okay to throw away the bag o' poo in someone else's trash can that is by the road? I would never have considered it before and thought "absolutely not" is that okay... but seriously this morning after running two miles with a bag of poo jiggling with every step I really considered it! My thought was, "is it that really big of deal? Would I be upset if someone did that to us? It's not a malicious act and it is a trash can...". I didn't do it and ended up carrying it all the way home and now I am wondering if it would have been wrong if I would have? I passed like 20 trash cans! Do you think it's absolutely gross and inappropriate to throw away your dog's doo in someone else's trash can OR not that big of deal?
Re: Running Moral Question
Hey Erin! We asked this question of ourselves when we first got our dogs. We decided that it probably wasn't a great idea. If someone put dog poop in our trash out by the road, I wouldn't really mind, especially since we put our own dogs' poop in there. However, I'm pretty sure anyone without a dog would mind. Could you tie the baggie to the middle of the leash? I've seen people do this before. We asked our trainer about it and she told us that there is no reason a dog should have to poop on less than a 2-hour run/walk if you take them to the bathroom before going out. So we started telling them "no" when they did try to pee or poop on walks, and eventually they stopped. HTH!
Edit: I just polled a few girls in the office that don't have dogs and they all agreed that they wouldn't mind as long as the trash hadn't already been picked up. I was surprised!
I don't mean to sound like a ***, but I would be pretty irritated if someone threw their dog's poop bag in my trash can and I'd probably tell you about it if I caught you.
I loooove dogs (although I don't own one), but I have a really big problem when other people's dog poo lands on my property in any way (which happens way more than I would like thanks to the inconsiderate people in my neighborhood), so I'm a may be a little sensitive to this issue.
Thanks for your input everyone and for the good advice! I am just impatient and get up an run right out the door. If I pottied and pooped her before she probably wouldn't have to go again.
You guys are the voice of reason! I was soooo tempted this morning, but I am glad I decided against it (esp since you guys affirmed that decision).
:giggle: Chymes, you amuse me. I agree. I'd rather it be in my trash can than on my yard.
