Recommend your laptop

I applied a few weeks ago to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to take online courses and get my Bachelor's, and I need a laptop. I've been in the market for one for a while, but now the want has turned more into necessity, so recommend yours, please.

I appreciate the help, ladies!

Re: Recommend your laptop

  • My laptop is the Apple Powerbook G4. It's a bit pricey, but I love it. After buying my first one in college, I refuse to go back to using PCs.

If you do go for the mac purchase (or any moderately/expensive computer, I recommend making sure it is also covered under your homeowner's or renters insurance (I have both the Best buy warranty and the ryder on my insurance). My homeowner's insurance covers anything that happens to it, from it getting dropped to water damage (and it is what paid for a new computer after it was damage on a flight).

  • Another vote for a Mac. I have a Macbook Pro that I LOVE! I upgraded at christmas from a Macbook and its awesome. If you do decided to go in that direction I would look into getting a refurbished one. My first macbook was and it lasted forever and we saved a couple of hundred dollars.

Oh and because you are a student you might be able to get a discount.

  • Welp heres another one for Mac! I have a macbook pro and a macbook. One is slightly older than the other. I've had both over 3 years and they are still more powerful than lower end PC's on the market.

I bought both brand new but its always good to check out the refurbs on apple.com. They are good deals for good computers. Happy shopping!

  • Thanks, ladies! Zach's been looking for me as well, and recommends an Acer that he found on newegg.com, so while I'm waiting for all the air conditioner to really cool this place down, I'll take a look at all of them. Thank you again!
  • I have an Acer, I really like it but I've only had it about a year so I can't give any info about how well it will last or anything of that sort...

  • From someone whose husband fixes computers for a living, Acer's generally aren't very good computers. If you're stuck on doing PC, go with HP or Dell, just make sure it's got enough memory to function well, and skip the tiny netbooks all together. Oh and Intel processors all the way.

However, I suggest a macbook, ideally a macbook pro, but that's just me. No viruses (don't use safari); no loading issues; quick updates; everything installs itself; built in bluetooth; student discount; excellent customer service; and wayyyyy higher quality.

  • I have a Dell at home which I really like.  It is the third Dell I have purchased so I am obviously pretty satisfied.  I replaced one because it was a desktop and I wanted a laptop.  My laptop lasted four years I think and I used it for work and home, I think the constant transporting back and forth (and the location I had to use it at work) lead to its demise.

I have a Compaq at work, I know the model I have is pretty cheap, but it works great.  I use it for all kinds of things outside word processing (photos, videos, interactive programs for my students) and it has worked fantastically.
