Re: Carpenter Ants

  • They are starting to appear in our house - I need to get ant traps.  This warm weather brings them out big time.

  • Yuck.  Do you have any wood that is rotting?  Typically that's why you get them.  Check around your windows to see.  Also, they are attracted to egg shells so make sure you dispose of them in the garbage disposal, don't throw them in the garbage.  Raid makes some awesome ant trap things.  We have them around the house and surprisengly Gabe doesn't touch them.  They have "food" in them that the ants eat and they bring it back to the nest and it kills the other ants.

Really?!  How random is it that our house was egged on Saturday night...

Have you had an ant problem in the past?  And it sounds to me like that's contributing to the problem.  At my parent's old house we struggled with carpenter ants.  We had a wood shelf outside next to the kitchen window that held the firewood.  It was rotting.  Once my dad took it down and threw it away the ant problem was gone.  While we had it though they would get into the garbage for the egg shells.  My mom had to put them down the garbage disposal because it was making the problem worse.

  • They are all over our backyard and I hate them!!  I had no idea they were attracted to rotting wood.  Our garage is pretty icky and with all the rain, I am sure that is what they are loving right now.

Anyone have any luck spraying for them outside?

  • We had an issue about this time last year but not nearly this bad.  We used some raid on the inside and outside and it seemed to get rid of them pretty quickly.  We didn't think about it again until this weekend...

We have a raid outdoor spray and you can also use diazon (sp?).  We spray that all around the house and it really helps.  I also recently got these things that stake in the ground and it repels the ants, I think they are made by Raid as well.  Between all of that we have no more ants in the house.

  • ugg I hate carpenter ants. I've found 2 in the house so far. Usually we get them around this time. I need to get some traps and spray around the house, I just haven't had a chance to yet. I will try some of the ideas given here, thanks ladies!

  • Yuck! I found 7 in the house this weekend!! I was upset. They are crawling all over the place in our backyard. DH put some of those ant stakes out, and some other stuff as well. Hopefully it helps!

  • We had a bunch of carpenter ants and used some borax to kill them. Worked amazingly well and it isn't toxic like most sprays (ie Raid).

  • Ack!!!  Those SOBs may have made a nest somewhere in the house.  I just had the exterminator out today so we'll see what happens.  I was killing anywhere from 1-7 of them almost daily in the kitchen...
