the two piece vs one piece debate

this is an embarrasing post, but i know nesties can help.

i am having trouble figuring out if i should get a few one piece bathing suits for our vacation next month. the two pieces i have now are from my honeymoon (five years ago). they fit fine, however these were worn on basically an empty beach with my new husband. i never had a two piece prior to that trip.

it is going to be hella hot in spain and we are likely going to be on the beach with LOTS of people and i am getting a little nervous about the two piece. i have big boobs and no matter how much weight i lose or running i do, my thighs are jiggly and large. part of me justifies the two piece in that no suit is going to cover my thighs and that my waist is the smallest part of my body so why not. but i have a bit of a tummy, which the one piece will hide though.

part of me just wants to say screw it and wear why i want, others be dammed but i think i might be a new cute one piece or tankini thing (although those have not worked for me in the past). however, i don't want to look like the grandma on the beach either. i have no idea how i got this self conscious all of a sudden. i wore the two piece to our pool this weekend (again...NO ONE THERE) and it just struck me that i was about to do this in front of a beach full of what is likely to be long, lean, toned bodies.

WWYD?

Re: the two piece vs one piece debate

  • I'd wear the two piece. Sidenote: I've been to Spain quite a few times and I always imagined bronze hot bodies too...but there are a lot of not-so-perfect bodies. I actually think it's more European to just let it all hang out even if you're not flat tummied and a size 2.

That's what I've always heard about European beaches. If you're comfortable wearing it to your pool (deserted as it might be), than I would wear it. Especially if it fits well and you have a nice waist and tummy.

  • If I recall my trip to Spain correctly, I'd say there were probably more non-perfect bodies than perfect bodies... and, all of the attention to any female body was stolen by the ubiquitous fat, hairy dude in a speedo that seemed to be at every beach I visited!

Go for the bikini now, while you can still get away with it.

  • I had this debate wtih myself last week!

I decided on a tankini and a strapless one piece that covers a little bit of thigh.

I agree with pp though - I think European thing is to let it all hang out.  And - it's not like you'll see these people again anyways, ykwim?

  • The first thing I thought of when I saw your subject line was "two pieces of cake or one piece of cake." Guess that tells you about my weekend, and why I don't intend to go to the pool anytime soon. Embarrassed

That being said, I have similar problem areas and just try to find a cut that works for me on my lower half. I'd rock the two-piece and bring a cover-up for times where you might not want to bare as much. Enjoy your trip!

I totally agree with this. I vote for the two piece!

  • Two-piece.  Women from most other countries do not have the same hang-ups about their bodies as Americans do.  Also, keep in mind that a lot of European women go topless at beaches/pools, so there may be many women showing a lot more skin than you and most will not have perfect bodies (by American standards) either.  Trust me, no one will notice your thighs!

  • I vote two-piece.

I have the same issue up top, even when I was a size 4/6 (sniff sniff, i miss those days).  I found that a structured two-piece top gave me much better support than any one-piece.  I have a tummy, too, but as long as my chest was supported and not over-exposed, I felt much better in my two-piece.

You might think about going to www.everythingbutwater.com (They have a store in Tysons) where you can get mix & match tops/bottoms.

    Most importantly, ENJOY your trip!

  • I vote two piece although I just bought my first one-piece recently in a long, long time.

I was forced to do it, thanks to my huge boobs from BF and the lovely stretch marks left by Baby Handy...

I agree Europeans will not care one iota about body shape. When I was in Spain, my sis and I went topless at the beach after seeing a bunch of other women doing it. It was rather freeing.

thanks all....good advice. i got my first suits at Water Water Everywhere and the staff there was very very helpful!  the two pieces where actually better for my top than some one pieces there! they also showed me that halter tops are best for me.

and now i get to stress out about topless beaches!

  • Two piece

My Greek island cruise ship was filled with Europeans. I thought I'd bought a sexy, glamorous, Sex in the City-esque plunging V neck one piece... Literally I saw ONE other person on the entire cruise with a one piece and she was probably over 70.

I think you'll actually stand out more in a one piece.

Well, why didn't you say topless beaches were in the mix?!  Slather on some SPF 50 and solve this dilemna right quick with a cute pair of swim boy shorts ;)

    DONE!
