Lurker Question
My DH is facing a job transfer to DFW and we have absolutely no clue about the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We are flying down next week for him to meet with some of the FAA officials and I'm planning on tagging along to check out the city and surrounding area.
My question... can you all give some recommendations for neighborhood/cities/school districts to look at. We would need to be with 30 mins of DFW. TIA!

Hi there,
I am not super familiar with school districts but wanted to say that we live in the Frisco/south west Mckinney area, and there is new development here if you are looking for a house. It's a easy commute under 30 minutes on the 121 tollway to the DFW airport ( that's how my husband gets to work).

YGPM in like 2 sec. Our roommate is a pilot who commutes through DFW to IAD. He might be able to give the best insight for commuter lots, emp parking/shuttle, etc to help as well
ETA: I would recommend Coppell or Grapevine ISD for kids as I have heard nothing but good things from them in our search for a house
Keller ISD and Grapevine Colleyville ISD are probably the closest to where you would like to be. My DH works at DFW Airport and we live in Grapevine. His commute is less than 10 minutes and we can get anywhere within Dallas/Fort Worth within 30 minutes since we are so central to everything.
Coppell ISD is a great district too. I would avoid Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD (no offense to anyone... I actually went there K-8th grade)

FWIW, employee parking lots are pretty far from the terminals, but there is an employee bus that takes you (him) to and from the lot. Although, I don't think that this is the kind of advice you need quite yet.

Thanks for all the quick responses. I'm beyond stressed thinking about trying to move with a 1yr old and being pg with number 2 so any advice is great. I'll start with these suggestions and welcome any add'l thoughts.
FWIW we come from a small town in NE Wisconsin so this if he does get the transfer, I'm hoping we can find some of the same types of small town feel there as we do here especially being a SAHM!

Well, that's the cool thing about these suburbs of Dallas and Fort Worth... they all have a kinda small town feel.
I'm not sure what your price range is, but Southlake-Carroll ISD is a great school district and tons of SAHMs... but the price tag on the homes is preeeeeetty up there.

I know Brianna said to avoid the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD (and no offense taken!)but we have a daughter that is about to be in 1st grade and we love the district. I grew up in Keller schools and my sister is a principal at a Keller school now and is actually looking to see if HEB has any principal openings because she likes the school district.
Grapevine-Colleyville would be my other suggestion. They are a great district and close to the airport and most other places in the DFW area. Construction on the 121/114 area is kinda a pain right now but I still like the area a lot! We live in Bedford and we were just saying this weekend that if we ever decide to move it will probably be to the Grapevine area.
To be fair... Bedford is a great city. We lived in Euless for a while too. I would more-so avoid the H of HEB.

Thanks ladies for all the info. I'm typing this all up to show my DH when he gets home from work. I'm excited to start this process and I'm really grateful that you all are so helpful! I really appreciate all the input you have given. Any more would be appreciated, both good areas and places to avoid.
I would suggest avoiding South Dallas.
ETA: Just avoid Dallas ISD in general.
Agreed, unless you find out that you have an exceptional child. The Talented and Gifted Magnet and the Science-Engineering Magnet are typically the top two high schools in the nation based on Newsweek.
I know they were talking about the construction around the airport but it's starting to look really good. I actually teach in Grapevine-Colleyville ISD and it's a terrific school district, you'll be fairly close to Dallas and Fort Worth. It's a wonderful location to just about any part of the Metroplex really.

I work at one of those Magnet schools in DISD, and our school is great, and so are our kids, I wouldn't want to teach any place else! That being said, I say find a place you love, and save and put your kids in private school. Texas is like #43 (i could be a little off, but that is close) in public education and they are about to cut money from public education. I think there is good and bad in all districts, so I would find a neighborhood you love and worry about schools later. I live in Frisco and love it, so that's my rec. GL
I agree to a point. But I think you should always consider school districts when moving if you have children. Assuming everyone can afford private school is a big assumption.

Exactly. We don't have children, and don't plan on having them for another 4-5 years, but when we do start looking at houses we will only look in areas where we will want to put our children in school, and that have good school districts. Private school isn't an option for us. It may be for some, but I think it's a bit presumptuous to think that most people can just move anywhere and if they don't like the school district, "oh well, we'll just put them in private school honey!"
Like Julie said, aside from the Magnet schools for exceptional students, I wouldn't recommend DISD to anyone moving to the DFW area.
We bought our house based on the school district... regardless if kiddos are a concern or not, it is a BIG property value concern and will definitely affect your resale.
We live in Carrollton but in the Denton ISD as opposed to Carrollton-Farmers Branch.
I'm not well versed in Denton ISD but I know that the schools in close proximity to our house are highly rated.
Because people move to areas where good schools are!

It definitely affects property value. Not many people want to live in an area where there's a poor quality school district unless they just flat out don't have another option.
Ditto. If we have kids, I don't know how I'm going to tell Bill that I'm not staying in this school district.
I will say that home values in Grapevine-Colleyville ISD have stayed up and stayed strong... even throughout this recession. I'm not sure if it's the people there or the school district itself, but that's a great selling point.
