teachers with masters or working towards it...

Hi Ladies-

So, I graduated a few years ago, and need to start considering my options so I can get my professional certificate.  I was trying to get a feel for the masters programs at different schools, so, for your masters...

where are/did you go to school?

what's your area of concentration?

what's your opinion of the school/program?

TIA!

Re: teachers with masters or working towards it...

  • I went to Marygrove for their Masters in the Art of Teaching program.  It is a group/online/video/phone program.  You find 2 or more other people and form a group.  (If you don't have 1-2 other people they will find a group for you.)  We met once a week and talked about the videos we watched and the readings.  There were reflection questions and many papers.  It was busy work, as most teaching programs are, but I was able to customize it to my own classroom, which I enjoyed.

I have been teaching for 10 years and I have found that unless you want to go into Administration (which, now, I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole) that the cheapest, fastest way to get your masters is the best.  I did learn some valuable things from the classes, but it wasn't enough to justify $10,000 and 2 years of my life that a master's degree demands.  The raise that I received afterward the graduated was the reward and the faster you can start making the money that a college educated person deserves, the better.

My undergraduate degree is in Chemistry and Physics, so a masters degree in that was not worth it to me.  As it stands right now, I am not teaching anything that I learned in my undergraduate degree, as I took engineering classes.  I just wanted to become a better teacher with my masters degree.  I think that Marygrove was a good fit for me.  I know many teachers that have gone through the program.  I would do it again if I had to.

Let me know if you have any questions.  Best wishes!

I received my Masters of Arts in Special Education through University of Phoenix. It was all online, as they didn't offer any on-campus classes for that specific program in Michigan. I enjoyed the online classes but it was quite a bit of work. I don't know if you have taken any online classes before but I feel like they are more work than going to class once a week for a few hours. Also, the observations and finding student teaching placement were up to me to find, they didn't set it up for me. I liked the program b/c of the flexibility it allowed me and their online setup is done well. I also went through them b/c my undergrad is in Psychology and since very few universities around here recognize that as a teachable major, I had few options and Phoenix was the easiest and fastest way for me to go. It did end up taking me 2 years to complete the program but I could have done it in 1 1/2 if my paper work and test results had come through quicker for my student teaching. HTH!

  • I received my Master of Arts in Teaching from Wayne State University.

I learned a decent amount, but the majority of classes are classroom instruction (in the evenings). I don't think it was worth the money/time I put into it, but I had the easiest thesis to write (a 15 page memoir).

It was easy to get my Master's. I'm debating going back for an MA in counseling.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have gotten the MA in counseling first.

  • I recieved a Masters in Special Education at Madonna university. All of the classes were on campus.. nothing online. and I totally regret it. 100%...I am stuck. Cant do anything else in this crap economy.

My advice to you is get a masters degree that is versatle. Something that doesnt make you stuck in the schools system. By the time you factor in a pay decrease and school loans, it doesnt make it worth it at all.

Teaching right now SUCKS. You are getting paycuts and benefits slashed left and right...the expectations in the classroom, i.e. merit pay, large class sizes and student based teacher evaluations are awful.  *** Snyder is going to make all schools charter and tear apart the union and any decent pay that we were getting after 15 years.

can you tell I am a wee bit bitter about the public school system in michigan?

I work in a charter school. no paycuts. no raises. We already make about 2/3s what I would make in a public school. :(

  • I did mine through Central Michigan's off campus program.  They had a campus in Troy that worked out well for based on where I live.

I did a Master's in Education with an emphasis on instruction.  It was the easiest choice and I actually learned a few new techniques.

The program and school were fine.  It was all about jumping through those hoops.  Every single class made me do a powerpoint presentation where I taught the class on a chapter in the book or something.  By the end, I was about to blow out my brains, but you do what you have to do to get that pay raise.

  • I'm a first year teacher so I don't have any advice for Master's Programs, but if you are working in a charter, consider the looking at university that runs your school.  My school is run through Grand Valley, and they offer certain Education masters programs for 1/2 price!
