HTT- US food and allergies

So, as you all know, we have been dealing with food allergies with Margot. It seemed so crazy to me that I know so many babies with food allergies now and wanted to find out why. My theory was that it is probably the food itself, since we process so much. Anyhow, I have been doing tons of research about this and have been hanging out on the new Food Allergy board quite a bit. I think I was in denial for a while about our crap food, then disbelief, and now I'm just infuriated! It's not fair to our children. Food allergies have increased 400 percent over the past 10-15 years. Asthma, ADHD, etc have also increased substantially. My friends daughter had to get tubes in her ears because of ear infections related to food allergies. It makes me so sad for these innocent babies. It makes me mad that the US allows Genetic engineering of our food when practically every other country has banned it. It also makes me mad that they contaminate just about everything with soy or soybean oil - I even have to hunt for vitamins without soy. It's ridiculous! Anyhow, Margot reacts to dairy, soy, wheat, and eggs, but it's an IGg reaction, not the IGe reaction that causes an anaphylactic reaction. Hers is mostly in her digestive system. I have cut out all of that plus I cut corn out of principle because of my research. If your interested, the following video is a must see IMO and the articles are short and interesting as well. Just thought some of you might be interested. If you watch the video, I would love to hear what you think.

Re: HTT- US food and allergies

  • This is why from the time he got off formula my sis and BIL have been going to 4 different supermarkets to get all organic food and making my nephew's food for every single meal. Thankfully, he doesn't seem to be allergic to anything, whether it's because of his diet or his genes.
  • Never considered that JJ's ear infections could be caused by food allergies, but he's never had any other food issues [haven't really tried peanuts yet, but he eats eggs and other products just fine, and I try to feed him organic as much as possible]. Very interesting.

  • Ive never thought about Little D's ear infections could be coming from food allergies. Wow, this is really interesting. Well, hubby and I might get ready to try the Paleo diet. We've been talking about it all weekend. Ummm

  • We were just talking about food allergies yesterday.  Because we had a container of light cream on the table for coffee, and it was marked Gluten Free, personally I really hope they're not adding wheat to the cream, because that would just be gross.

We also discussed the reason for all the allergies is because things are so over processed.  When we were kids, you never heard of gluten allergies and if you did it was like huh?? what is that.  And there were barely any nut allergies.  I actually fear for the kids today and what it's going to be like for their kids.

Totally agree!  It's like out of nowhere, kids now have fatal peanut allergies.  When I was younger, maybe someone had an allergy to chocolate or a bee sting, but now it's getting really crazy.  In college, I was a camp counselor and almost ever child in my group had a bad allergy to something.  It was insane!

We try to pay attention to what we eat and definitely try to stay away from processed food more than ever, especially after watching the movie Food Inc.  Also, Oprah did a very interesting episode on being a Vegas a few months back.  Very watch worthy, even if you aren't an Oprah fan.  I couldn't never be a vegan, but they encourage trying to be veganish.

We have already decided we are definitely only giving Robert organic milk at 1 year.  I also want to make my own baby food so I know exactly what is going into it.  Plus, it will be more more cost saving for us if we do want to go 100% organic with all of the fruits and veggies.

  • It is crazy how much stuff that is allowed in our food.  Having food allergies myself I have wondered how much more common it is now.  We eat a lot less processed food now, since we eat naturally gluten free food.  So far Will has only had organic baby food.  Once he starts eating real food, we will try to buy even more organic than we do now.

  • I don't really think about food allergies much because none of us have them. It is crazy how many kids these days have food allergies, though, and how severe they can be.
