Book Recommendations

I am looking to put together a list of true crime books for a project in my forensic science class.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

ETA: I know I should probably post on the nest book club, but I've never posted there and I fear being attacked by regulars!

Re: Book Recommendations

  • It's kind of schizophrenic, because it's also about the World's Fair, but Devil in the White City is really good and tells the story of H.H. Holmes, a serial killer.

Also, A Death in Belmont (about the Boston Strangler) had me sleeping with the light on for weeks.

Ann Rule is a true crime author and her books are great.

I can't figure out how to make it clicky but it's a link to her website with all her books.

  • I read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote and loved it. This is one of my favorite genres but sadly the one I read the least.

    Great book!

Thanks for the recs so far.  I know I could just pull a list off the internet or make a list of what is available at the library, but I want to make sure I am giving the kids good titles and not something that is tabloid-y or not 100% factual.

I don't really have anything to offer but I am going to write some of these titles down and try to check em out because they sound interesting.  I love watching shows based on this kind of stuff, so I am sure I'd like reading about it too.

Do you have to get the book list approved by your school?  I went to a public school and they were so stinkin' strict on what we could and could not read.  I am sure some of the true crime novels get kind of graphic so whether or not the school would be cool with it was the first thing that came to mind.  You sound like such a cool teacher though, I wish I had been given the chance to take forensic classes etc.

All of my forensic students have their parents sign a permission slip of sorts at the beginning of the semester that notifies them that graphic materials and sensitive topics will be discussed/used in class and that if this is offensive they need to change classes.  So I cover my a$$ that way.

Very cool...I'm totally jealous that kids get to take those kinds of classes these days.  Aw "these days" look at me sounding all old lol.
