WAHM/D's - home office suggestions?

I'n addition to going off BC and TTC in the fall, I'm also about to launch a business that would allow me to be a SAHM. What would you say are some essentials and some luxuries that make for a good, baby-friendly home office?

 TIA!

    Absolutely.

I work from home, not even trying to launch my own business; I work for someone else. My husband is home during the day as well; he recently had a serious injury so I often have to take him to physical therapy, doctor's appointments, etc. While my working from home makes it easy for me to care for him when needed, he is plenty mobile to get in my way and pull me out of my "work zone." He's an adult and he has a hard time understanding that just because I'm "home" doesn't mean I'm actually home (as in, able to hang out.) I don't think it would be possible to function in a home office, especially trying to launch a new business, with a new baby. For example, when I take my husband to appointments, I usually bring my laptop and work while he does his therapy. Obviously with a baby your attention needs to be fully on the child.

I think baby friendly and office aren't really ever compatible. You can certainly try to baby proof your work space if you think you're child will be in there, but the core components of an office won't change. I have a laptop, monitor, printer/photocopier, mouse, keyboard, phone and storage for office supplies like paper and pens.

Just be aware that by 2 and probably before most kids can reach a desk very easily. My daugther could pull anything off my desk without issue. So being "high" doesn't really mean baby proof.

I think you'll need a gate for the things that just can't be child proofed (for example a shredder). Lots of ties for cords and something to "hide" them in (My baby proofer suggesting running cords through a tall trash bin behind the desk. You just cut a hole for the outlet.)

I wireless mouse might be helpfully as would a wireless key board since it is one less wire.

Honestly though I never work with my daughter in the room. She used to come sit on my lap every now and then but now she grabs everything in reach. She's with my nanny during working hours so I can properly focus.

  • Yes... I'm not sure what we'll do about childcare yet. I have worked in childcare for over 10 years and I've seen some great places and some really terrible places. I've also nannied for WAH parents before and that would probably be the better option for us. The nice thing is that with this business I can take as much or as little work as I like - so I may just work PT until the kiddo's ready to start pre-k. Yet another bridge we'll cross when we come to it. :P

For this post, I'm more looking for what things would be good for a home office - bearing in mind that I'll have to child-proof it. :) Gating the shredder is a great idea! I hadn't thought of that! :) Thanks guys!
