Did anyone catch this? Woooooow. I didn't know much about the gypsy/Irish traveler culture before watching this. Hmmm. It's all a bit...over the top!!
Not only are weddings huge (usually with a teenaged bride & groom) but first communions are also a BIG deal.
This is a first communion dress:

This dress weighed 70 pounds.

Oh yes, it lights up. The dress maker came to the wedding armed with a fire extinguisher "just in case".
The girls are raised to be housewives and the men basically rule everything. They are very strict Roman Catholic. BUT, they dress and dance like little prostitutes from a very young age... It's an interesting culture.

Re: My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding
Kiz, I saw this too! For the first time ever my husband said, "Turn it back to the wedding show." We couldn't stop staring! I never knew about this culture either.
The little girls in their skanky outfits, I can't get over it. Oh and the "grab" thing, not okay.
Yeah their dating rituals were a bit barbaric!!
I never saw or heard of this show till this weekend. It looked like a train wreck show I wanted to watch, but I just couldn?t wrap my head around what was happening mostly because it was a cultural thing and not a just a train wreck thing. My ideas of gypsys comes almost exclusively from the Disney?s Hunchback of Notre Dame and Cher?s Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves lyrics?.and in all honesty the vision I had in my head was not quite as sad as what I saw on the show.
I think today's gypsies, Irish travelers etc. are much more "modernized" than before. Some of them buy houses and stay put. Historically I think they all were nomadic and had the reputation of being thieves and scammers. I think that negative stereotype still follows them today even though that might not be how their culture operates anymore. The show made it seem like they are still social outcasts in their communities.
A lot of them still are scammers and thieves. It sucks to stereotype, but sometimes the stereotype rings true! Travellers don't pay taxes, park their campers/trailers where they like and claim that land as theirs. There is A LOT of resentment toward them in Europe - and a lot of it is based on current reality, not historical perceptions.
DH's family home was robbed by travellers and a lot of valuable/sentimental stuff was taken. . . so I get an earful from the ILs any time I try to defend them. I've given up trying and sadly, may be coming around to their point of view.
Bummmmer dude! I can see how they wouldn't be viewed in the nicest light. They showed one of their camps being torn down and the show made it seem all "boo hoo" but if they are parked their illegally....then...well....wrecking ball it is!
We were warned about the gypsies in Rome when living there. One came up to my friend and ran her finger down his cheek. Freaked him out. Luckily he had enough sense to immediately put his hand on anything valuable he was holding because the lady's other hand was going right towards it.
We also heard of them throwing baby dolls at people and then grabbing valuables when the person tried to catch the baby....because who would let a baby drop?? Freaky man. I was overly cautious with my things but I left with everything I went there with so I guess a little caution never hurt!
Someone on another board said they will paint your house, collect your money, head out of town, and then when it rains your paint job just runs off. Not cool man!
