Yard Sales

Has anyone had one or go to many and have any tips?  We're going to participate in the big one our neighborhood has every year and really have no clue what i'm doing.  My friend google has a ton of conflicting info, one site says baby stuff doesn't sell while the other one says it usually sells great.

Re: Yard Sales

  • It should be really easy since your neighborhood will probably do the advertising.  Put whatever you want to sell out; don't worry about what google says on the baby stuff.  Put the best stuff on top, visible prices (people hate to ask how much something is), and make sure it is organized and people will come up to look.   Also, I've found prices to be cheaper at a yard sale than on craigslist so make sure you are reasonable.

  • i agree with above.

marketing is key and since its a group sale that should be pretty good, price and organization are also factors. i like items to look clean etc.

that being said the only time we have had a yard sale was when we lived in south street so it was kind of easy with the kind of crowds we had and the items we were selling.

Be prepared with lots of change. Also, watch out for early birds and have your stuff set up and ready to go before the advertised start time. People will want to haggle with you, especially as the day goes on...be prepared to drop prices on some items that haven't sold by the mid-point of the garage sale. Don't bring unsold items back into your house after the garage sale; pack up the car and deliver the goods to Habitat or to Goodwill.
  • I agree with the others.  Especially with pricing and organization.  I do not want to look through the box you pulled out of the basement.  You show me what you have, I don't want to find it for you.

If you organized kids/baby clothes by size, or at least basic size, that would be amazing.  If I see a pile of clothes that looks like 6months through Juniors, I won't bother to look through it.  Or one time someone had their clothes organized by color.  Men, women, and childrens clothes all mixed together.  Very helpful for those planning a family portrait...but that's about it.

Even if your neighborhood is advertising, I would put your own ad on craigslist so people know what you specifically are selling.  Plus it's free.  I don't always have time to just browse around a big neighborhood yard sale, but if I see people are selling what I'm looking for, I'll go to specific houses.  If you put an ad on craiglist, post a picture if you are selling any big stuff like furniture.

  • perfect info, thank you!! i washed all the clothes, have them separated out by size, gender, tops, and bottoms and accessories. i was only going to do spring and summer stuff, as that's what i thought people would be buying, but should i add in the fall/winter stuff? Our strollers & carseats are in really good condition so i was thinking like $25 for the strollers, $15 for the carseats and $7 for the bases, clothes like $.50 - $4 (for the nicer stuff thats new w/tags), does this sound reasonable?

  • also after it is over take the stuff pack it in the car, go to goodwill and get a for tax purposes and  don't let the stuff back in the house!
  • I think your prices are good.  When I go to yard sales, I expect 0.50 to $1 for clothes.  If it's something really nice, I'm sure you can get a few dollars.

You may need to come down a little in your carseats only because I've seen them at consignment sales for about that price and would expect them to be cheaper at a yard sale.  But you could always start there and see what happens. :-)

I would also do all seasons.
