glider/rockers (baby question)
So we have this ancient rocker (it came with my parents' first house, so circa 1920?) that's pretty nice (need to be refinished and new cushions) and a "standard" wood rocker from our neighbor's moving sale (also needing to be refinished) but we're thinking about getting a glider....(I also don't know if either will be done anytime soon, and even the big one has wood arms so the long-term comfort is questionable)
We really like this one at BRU but the reviews are eh. I was looking around for something cheaper, but JCP is about the same cost.
if we get something new, it has to be "normal" looking so we can use it in a non-nursery later (well, assuming it isn't super gross by then). And we need an ottoman. we're getting a glider ottoman regardless.
so...ideas/recommendations/etc? I feel like this is a little frivolous, but we'll be spending a lot of time rocking babies, no?

If I had the room for a chair like that I would have gotten something like that for sure.
We just have a small basic glider and I fit in it just fine but it isn't super comfortable and Brynn is stretching out so much that she has a hard time laying on my lap like she used to.
Emily, I also went back and forth on the glider thing.
I know I'm not a mom yet, so take my advice for what it is, but I say get a glider. I talked to every friend/mom I know and basically EVERY person who had a glider LOVED it, used it ALL.THE.TIME and said I had to have one. Moms without them said not to bother. I can only take this to mean that if you have it, you use it, and you love it. If you don't have it, how can you know what you are missing? Since we have the space (barely) and the budget, we decided to get one.
I spent weeks stalking Dutalier gliders on Craigslist and had a hard time b/c 1. we didn't yet have a car it would fit into, 2. We work full time and often by the time we could go see the chair it sold and 3. The few that we almost made happen came from homes with cats and Ken is SUPER allergic an since it is expensive to have the cushions cleaned, we gave up. We ended up getting a super nice new dutalier from the baby furniture place near us. I decided to NOT get the ottoman b/c I feel like they sometimes put weird pressure on my back, I find they make it awkward to get in/out of the chair, and I think it will take up way too much space in the nursery. I decided to just get the glider and a nursing stool.
Also, I figure it will always be nursery furniture (even if it was like $500) but hopefully if I take good care of it I can sell it on craigslist when we are done using it for like $175 or even $200 (which is what people list them for here).
Last, I know a lot of folks with toddlers who still do story time, etc in these chairs. I think it is worth the investment. Register for one and see if you get it (and if not you can get it after with the completion coupon).
Another not-mom-yet response...
We haven't started shopping for furniture yet, but I'm planning on getting a glider. I happened to sit in one at a furniture store near us a few weeks ago and OMG I didn't want to get up. One of the most comfortable things I've ever sat in. We also have a lot of space in the room that will be the nursery, so I figured, why not.
We are taking one of the rocking chairs from my parents house... and I need to find some cushions for them. We just don't have the budget to get a glider, as much as I'd love one! My parents used the rocking chair for us so I think it's cool to use it for our kid.
That looks so comfy! I have more a rocking chair style glider with matching ottoman and I've used it everyday since we brought M home. I even nursed her in it in the middle of the night instead of in bed when she was super tiny. My SIL's both have them and they are a million times more comfy than mine, so go with comfort over cost. I wish I had! I still nurse M in my glider with a Boppy to this day.
My only hesitation with getting one like you show is that I've heard that you can almost get "stuck" in them if they are too soft and it can be tricky to get in and out of it. This would come into play in the early post partum days when you are still sore (either from a vaginal birth or C-section) or if you are trying to get up carefully while holding a sleeping infant as to not wake them.
So i'm the ss here. we got new furniture like 3 weeks before we had ben. And I took dh's leather recliner that rocks for ben's room, which is super comfy, but I *never* use it. I mean like I've used it maybe a dozen times in 8 mos. I think even if I had a different style, like a glider I wouldn't use it. BUT not using it also helped contribute to me co-sleeping ben, b/c i'd get up to feed him and put him back in bed with me.
