Poll: What laundry detergent do you use?

Are you brand loyal? I always use either Tide or Cheer, but only because that's what my family always used growing up. I'm wondering if some of the less expensive brands are just as good.

Re: Poll: What laundry detergent do you use?

  • I like Gain because of the scent, but I have been noticing lately that my whites aren't staying white. I don't know if that's because of the water here or the detergent.
  • We use Tide ultra HE because DH breaks out when I use Gain or other detergents (but every once in a while I use the Purex sheets).  Before we got married I used Gain mostly, but I wasn't brand loyal.

Consumer Reports shows variations of Tide taking 4 of the top 5 spots for conventional washers (Era was the other) and for HE washers, Tide, All, Gain, and Up & Up brands are the top five.

  • I use Purex. I'm not particularly brand loyal, but this is as cheap as I get with detergent. It's the least expensive while still smelling good. Cheaper brands are gross to me. More expensive brands work great, but detergent is costly enough without me paying for their advertising.
  • Watkins. I like the eco-friendly factor and gets my icky chore clothes super clean.

I don't mind Tide either and use it once in awhile.

I'll admit to liking "higher" end detergents. The cheap stuff either doesn't clean or I break out in a scaly rash. I also swear low end detergents fade my clothes faster.

  • I use purex. Like pp said it's the cheapest one I like. I perfer Tide but I don't like the price.

We usually buy Era.  I love Tide, but will typically only buy it if it's on a really good sale - that company sure is proud of their detergent!  Wink

  • We use unscented Purex

  • We always use Tide. Right now we are using Tide for coldwater.

  • I always used purex or arm and hammer because they were the cheapest and still good quality (IMO)..but after my son was born and we cloth diaper we switched everything to Tide Ultra Concentrated Powder.  I get it at Costco and it comes out to $24 for 180 washes, but we use much less then they even recommend and everything comes out nice and clean!
  • Xtra. It's cheap and smells great. Works wonders on my stinky work clothes.

  • Tide free and clear in the liquid.  My mother and grandmother have always used Tide, same on H's side of the family.  It's a laundry detergent that doesn't make either of us itch, so we'll be sticking with it until we're dead.

  • The cheapest unscented detergent available at BJs on the day I go shopping.  Scented detergents always give me a rash.
  • We use All Free & Clear.  I developed an allergy to regular detergents as a teenager, and All was the first brand to have a free and clear version in my area, so I've been using it ever since.  My H doesn't have a preference, so it's what we always use.

  • I use homemade detergent. The dog and I have really bad allergies to alot of detergents on the market- but we don't seem to have problems now.

  • All, Gain or Tide for HE washing machines....any of these on sale I will get..

I'm finishing up the last bit of ALL but have a Gain liquid detergent waiting to get used up...

Tide Free and Clear. Beforen the baby we used Tide with Downy

  • we use gain.  i love the smell.  my sister works for procter & gamble (who makes gain and tide) and she said that there's a specific consumer segment that they market towards that shops for detergent and other products just for the smell.  procter & gamble calls them "scent seekers."  i guess i fall into that category.  :)
  • For the baby, we will be using Tide Free and Clear.

For us, we only use ALL. It is not too expensive, gets my clothes clean, and the only thing that does not make me break out in rashes! DH took clothes over to MIL's house while I was sleeping last week, and washed them in Arm & Hammer. I did not notice, and wore a pair of jeans and a shirt. I was breaking out in hives and rashes within minutes. He feels really bad, but I never told him I was the most sensitive to that one. He just wanted to do chores while I slept. ;]

However, I am a SUPER couponer. I love my coupons, and get often get laundry soap for little or no money. We use any off brand, other brands or whatever on other things. Dish towels, cleaning rags, etc.

  • I think I'm the only one on here that uses Arm and Hammer!  :)  Great stuff, a 30 load bottle usually only costs me $1.99.  I have 10 of them in my pantry...Walgreens has sales and so does my local grocery store.  There's always coupons in the paper too.

  • I'll use pretty much whatever "free and clear" detergent there is that is the cheapest - it's usually All.

I do use Woolite on delicates, though,  and am pretty brand loyal there. I'm sure it had a lot to do with my mom using it when I was growing up.

I'm one of those that makes decisions based on scent..  even housecleaners have to smell good.

  • well DH loves Purex cause of the cost, I love gain cause of the scent.

  • We use Tide or All.  I'll get whichever one of those I can get cheap with coupons, but I try to get the free and clear whenever I can.

I only use plain liquid Tide.  I'll be switching everything to Tide's free and clear version since my skin is so sensitive, I'm preparing for the baby's skin to be the same.

I'm also using the regular liquid Tide, but after I'm done with this bottle, I'll be switching to the free and clear version.

  • I usually buy purex for the cost & it works well.  It's an added bonus that I can usually clip a coupon making it even cheaper- yay!  When I know I'll be washing a load of DH's golf clothes I usually throw in a Tide Stain Release in-wash duo pac.
  • usually it's All Free & Clear but now we're using Target's brand of Free & Clear detergent. I also will add Borax or oxyclean too. I don't like anything with a strong scent to it.
